Christmas gets crazy in the trailer for Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina holiday special. The twisted adaptation of the Archie Comics series promises a holiday-themed spectacle with a twisted, satanic edge - as fans have come to expect.

Based on the comic series of the same name, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina follows teenager Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) as she comes to a crossroads in her half-human/half-witch life when she must decide one life over the other. When she ultimately chooses to carve her own path, she invites an endless wave of supernatural opposition - which ultimately extends to her celebration of the holiday season. With the winter solstice approaching, the Spellmans are visited by some unwelcome guests as they embrace peculiar twists on classic holiday traditions. The episode stars series regulars Shipka, Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez, Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, and Lachlan Watson.

Titled “A Midwinter’s Tale,” the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina holiday special promises the same sinister tone from the first season. Sabrina’s Aunt Zelda (Otto) prepares for the celebration by lighting a yule log - not for warmth, but protection - and Sabrina’s friends are drawn into the morbid merriment of holiday celebrations with the Church of the Night. Everyone from Santa impersonators to Christmas ghosts to Miss Wardwell (Gomez) biting off the head of a Sabrina-inspired Christmas cookie is in the mix to ring in bright solstice festivities before the new year (and before a new season).

Aside from holiday celebrations, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has also released the trailer for Part 2 of the series, which will debut on Netflix in April. The trailer for the second season shows off the ongoing - if not conflicted - journey of the titular witch, while also highlighting the introduction of new creatures, new foes, and a new, darker look (which Sabrina attributes to “a new year”).

The quick turnaround for the second season, as well as the holiday special, proves Netflix’s confidence in the series. A similarly quick turnaround happened with the Netflix series Queer Eye when it was announced in spring 2018 that its second season would be released four months after the first season’s February premiere. As for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, its success shouldn’t come as much of a surprise - not only on account of the source material’s popularity, but given the fact that its creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is also the creator and showrunner of the massively popular Riverdale.
