The trailer for the new Charlie’s Angels is here. Sony has been in the business of reviving its biggest properties of late, having recently brought the Men in Black back and scheduled the long-awaited Zombieland 2 to arrive later this fall. After that, the studio will return to the Charlie’s Angels franchise - a brand that hasn’t been on the big screen since 2003. And much like this month’s Men in Black: International, the series will be relaunched with a partial continuation that takes the films global.
In the 2019 Charlie’s Angels, the Townsend private detective agency has gone international and has multiple teams of Angels and Bosleys running around the world, saving the day. The film is being cowritten and directed by Elizabeth Banks (who also plays one of the Bosleys), and features Ella Balinska (The Athena), Naomi Scott (Aladdin), and Kristen Stewart as its three leads. Patrick Stewart also costars here, along with To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’s Noah Centineo. Now, there’s a teaser that shows the new Angels in action.
The first official trailer for Charlie’s Angels (2019) has dropped online, and will be attached to Spider-Man: Far From Home in theaters beginning next week. You can check it out in the space below.
Judging by the trailer, Elena Houghlin (Scott) will serve as audiences’ guide to the bigger and wilder world of Charlie’s Angels in the upcoming film. The preview doesn’t focus too much on plot beyond establishing that Elena has been working on a product “that could revolutionize the power industry”, but that she fears will be weaponized. Rather, the majority of the trailer is devoted to showing off the Angels’ shiny new toys - including, lots of slick outfits and deadly weapons - and the various hijinks that Elena and her new teammates get up to. The movie appears to carry-over the playful tone of McG’s Charlie’s Angels films from the ’00s, but also tone down the objectification of the Angels and better flesh them out as characters.
Banks is best known for her comedic work and made her directorial debut on Pitch Perfect 2, so Charlie’s Angels seems like a good match for her sensibilities. The actor-turned filmmaker hasn’t made an action movie before, but the set pieces and fight scenes teased in the trailer look pretty decent so far. Her cast similarly appear to be enjoying themselves here, with Stewart cracking jokes and Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou joining the fun as two other Bosleys in the Angel-verse. Sony’s attempt to revive the Men in Black franchise with International didn’t go so well, but things may work out better for Charlie’s Angels, if the trailer’s any indicator.
