Netflix has already seen two seasons of Marvel’s Daredevil come and go since launching the grittier, street-level side of the MCU in 2015. In that time the corner of the live-action comic book universe has grown by leaps and bounds, adding a nearly complete Defenders roster to the streaming service’s content catalogue that includes Jessica Jones and, more recently, Luke Cage. But while the titles have increased and their locations ventured from Hell’s Kitchen to Harlem, the Man Without Fear has played host to some of the most interesting characters from the funny book pages, like Elektra and the Punisher – both of whom struck a morally ambiguous chord with viewers and with the title character’s own violent crusade against the evil and the corrupt.
But while Matt Murdock has interacted with (and fought, mostly) such adversaries as the Kingpin, the Hand, Nobu, and, considering how their first meeting went, the Punisher, there’s one classic Daredevil character who has yet to set his sights on the sightless hero of Hell’s Kitchen. Since his integral part in Frank Miller’s acclaimed run on the title in ’80s, Bullseye has consistently ranked as one of ol’ Horn Head’s top adversaries. Not only is he a deadly marksman with the ability to turn everyday objects into implements of murder – e.g., the playing cards he is so frequently depicted to be throwing with lethal accuracy – he is also responsible for the death of Elektra Natchios (in issue #181) as well as Karen Page (in Daredevil vol. 2 #5). Needless to say, the guy is not only a stone-cold killer, but he’s sort of the anti-cupid when it comes to Matt’s love life.
With that kind of resume, it’s easy to understand why the potential arrival of Bullseye on television would be met with equal parts excitement and trepidation. After all, both Karen and Elektra have already been established on the show (and yes, Elektra died at the end of season 2, but she’ll get better), and it’d be a shame to see the assassin put producers in the uncomfortable position of informing either Deborah Ann Woll or Elodie Yung (again) that their services will no longer be needed. Despite that possibility, though, series star Charlie Cox has remained steadfast in his desire to see the blue-suited killer appear on the show.
In fact, at a recent appearance at Wizard World Pittsburgh (via ScreenGeek), Cox reiterated his hope that Bullseye would one day make life tough for Matt Murdock and those around him. Cox said:
Also on hand was Foggy Nelson – or Elden Henson, which the actor likely prefers – who joked that the series was planning to go an entirely new route with the character, by casting the star of FX’s Baskets as the deadly villain. Henson said:
“It’s no secret, I’ve said it before and I get in trouble every time I say it, I’d like to see Bullseye make an appearance at some point. I think it’s a really interesting opportunity. Deborah Ann Woll obviously does not want Bullseye to show up for obvious reasons. Elodie Yung, who plays Elektra, doesn’t want Bullseye to show up either.”
While such a casting announcement would bring the untold fury of the internet onto the service that calls that very place home, there’s no need for fans to worry just yet. Details on Daredevil season 3 are scant at the moment, as the Matt Murdock’s services are needed on the currently filming series The Defenders, which, in addition to the also-in-production first season of Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher, means the Man Without Fear isn’t expected to be punching bad guys in his solo series before 2018. That certainly doesn’t rule out Bullseye making an apperance elsewhere on Netflix, but with the series’ star repeatedly pulling for the character to show up on the show that started it all, that’s the most likely place he’ll appear – if and when he does.
“I actually heard they’re going to cast Zach Galifianakis as Bullseye.”
