The Marvel Cinematic Universe was first launched when Samuel L. Jackson stepped on screen as Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man and spoke to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) about the Avengers Initiative. Since then, Marvel Studios has released 11 films – including two hero team-up films, The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron – and premiered four television series, two apiece on ABC and Netflix. However, the MCU shows no sign of stopping, with plenty more films and TV series in various stages of development.
The next chapter in the Netflix corner of the MCU arrives in Daredevil season 2, introducing even more comic book characters like Elektra (Élodie Yung) and Punisher (Jon Bernthal). Now, Daredevil’s own Matt Murdock has weighed in on how The Man Without Fear would fit in with the film side of the MCU.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Charlie Cox said that he believes Daredevil and The Avengers could work on screen together despite the differing tones of the Netflix series and the movies:
“Some people have [wondered] based on the tone the show, how Matt would fit in with the Avengers. I was reading Civil War the other day, and Matt Murdock… is kind of an ass. He’s in the back, standing around grumpy a lot of the time, and every now and again, he just says ‘Well, we’re not doing that’ or something to that effect, and I’m like, ‘That’s the character, we’re fine.’ So tonally, with Matt I think we’re right on point and he’d be a perfect fit in the larger MCU.”
Certainly, if Daredevil appeared in an MCU film, whether it be Avengers: Infinity War or another feature entirely, Matt Murdock wouldn’t necessarily need to bring along the dark tone of his Hell’s Kitchen-based series to the movie. For instance, The CW’s Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) adapts to the lighter tone of The Flash during the network’s annual crossover event – though, arguably, Barry Allen brings his lighter tone to his fellow CW series when he appears on Arrow. It’s entirely possible the character of Matt Murdock could adapt his tone to that of an MCU film, so that fans could see Daredevil fighting alongside The Avengers.
However, the difficulty in crossovers between Marvel films and television series has more to do with the divide between Marvel Studios and Marvel TV, which makes overlap between the two much more difficult. As Captain America: Civil War co-director Anthony Russo explained when asked if Netflix’s Marvel heroes could appear in Infinity War, he said, “it’s complicated.” So, whether or not Daredevil fits into the tone of an Avengers film may not matter if those that have creative control are unable (or unwilling) to make it happen.
Still, considering the strength of Marvel’s television series, both on Netflix and ABC, many fans are certainly hoping the studio makes it work, so that Daredevil, his fellow Defenders, and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can join the film side of the MCU.

Daredevil season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix on March 18th, 2016, followed by Luke Cage season 1 on September 30th, 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.
