Chace Crawford has been cast in the Charles Manson biopic Charlie Says. Sometimes it seems like Hollywood never tires of telling the true life stories of serial killers. Recently, the indie film My Friend Dahmer garnered favorable reviews after a premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival followed by a wider release. And a film about Ted Bundy titled Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is currently in post-production. Meanwhile, casting is underway for the Charles Manson movie Charlie Says from American Psycho director Mary Harron.
Charles “Charlie” Manson was a cult leader in the 1960s, leading a group he called The Family. Members of Manson’s Family were responsible for the murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others in Tate’s home in 1969 as well as two other people the following day in an attempt to create a race war. After Manson was imprisoned, another of his followers - Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme - attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford in order to give Manson the chance to testify at her televised trial and spread his message further. Manson only recently passed away, having lived out the remainder of his life in prison.
And now Charlie Says is adding Chace Crawford to the cast according to THR. He will play Tex Watson, one of the members of the cult who was responsible for the seven murders. The film already stars former Doctor Who star Matt Smith as Manson, as well as Suki Waterhouse (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Odessa Young (Assassination Nation), and Marianne Rendon (Imposters) as other members of The Family. Carla Gugino (Sin City) is also playing a role in the film.
Charlie Says is not the only Manson movie in the works in Hollywood. Quentin Tarantino is working on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Leonardo DiCaprio as as actor struggling to transition from TV to film - who happens to live next door to Sharon Tate. However, that project might be in trouble. Whereas Tarantino’s movie is focused on Tate’s neighbor, the focus of Charlie Says is the three female members of his family who participated in the murders along with Watson. The release date is still unknown at this time.
