As HBO’s Game of Thrones prepares for its final season and those impending spin-off shows, actor Charles Dance has revealed that he would love to return to the world of Westeros for another dance with dragons.
Playing tyrant Tywin Lannister on the first five seasons of the show, Dance is up there with the likes of Diana Rigg, Jim Broadbent, and Sean Bean as some of the more famous faces actors to grace David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ frosty fantasy. Like most Thrones actor, Dance knew he wouldn’t be sticking around forever, but it sounds like he is reluctant to leave King’s Landing behind just yet.
Speaking to Metro, the 71-year-old gushed over his time on the record-breaking show and revealed that he would return if the prequels could live up to their predecessor:
“If it was in the same calibre, yes. Because Game Of Thrones really was as good as it gets. It’s a fantastic series. I look back on it fondly.
“Occasionally you have long days in the cold, the horse doesn’t behave properly, or the armour sticks in the back of your neck, but we’re not down in the mines digging for coal, we’re actors. We’re pretending for everything, and we’re very lucky to be able to do that.”
As the formidable Lannister patriarch, Tywin was responsible for his unruly brood of villainous offspring. As well as spawning Jaime ‘Kingslayer’ Lannister and the venomous Cersei, he was also the grandfather of sadistic Joffrey. That being said, also (seemingly) being the father of fan-favorite Tyrion, Twing did bring some good into the Seven Kingdoms.
Despite being one of the show’s biggest bad guys, Tywin’s military expertise and cunning intelligence made him a strangely likable member of the cast. For those who had read George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” books, they knew Tywin’s lucky was eventually going to run out, and Benioff and Weiss gave Daddy Lannister his glorious toilet death back in season 4’s game-changing finale.
While it would be amazing to see Dance back in the role once again, there is one slight problem. Out of all five Thrones prequels in development, the writers have clearly stated that they won’t be prequels in the traditional sense. Although set in the Thrones universe and recognizable to fans, the shows will look at new characters instead of covering events like Robert’s Rebellion.
That being said, can you just imagine Dance sticking on some gold armor and playing some ancient Lannister descendent from years gone by? It is certainly a possibility, and a casting that would be sure to go down well with fans of the show. Just don’t get off your chamber pot quite yet Charles!
