Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman will host Saturday Night Live in April. After inspiring tears of joy in movies theatres, Boseman will soon have a chance to make a live studio audience cry with scripted comedy.
It’s been another hot week for Boseman. Last weekend, Black Panther officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office as the film continues to break records. Further, Marvel Studios just released the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, in which the actor will reprise his Black Panther role for directors Anthony and Joe Russo. It’s the third installment for The Avengers franchise, and fans have already begun theorizing about potential deaths and Thano’s uncertain fate. The trailer has already made history after accumulating 230 million views in the first 24 hours – a new record. MCU fans are more than hyped, and they’ll soon get even more of the Black Panther star with his new TV hosting gig.
As reported by TV Line, NBC announced Boseman as an upcoming host during last night’s broadcast, which featured the return of former cast member Bill Hader (star of HBO’s upcoming series Barry). Boseman will host the April 7 show at Studio 8H, with musician Cardi B set to perform as well. On Twitter, the Marvel star acknowledged his upcoming SNL gig. It’s safe to say that NBC can expect SNL’s ratings to jump significantly when Boseman takes the stage.
Boseman first appeared on network television in 2003 with a role on NBC’s Third Watch. Through 2011, he further developed his performance skills on the small screen, with his last TV roles coming in 2011 on ABC’s Castle and Detroit 1-8-7, along with a guest spot on Fox’s Fringe. Boseman also had a 13-episode character arc on NBC’s 2010 series Persons Unknown. With his upcoming sketch comedy gig, Boseman will have a chance to show fans something new.
So, what type of comedy makes sense for Boseman? In 2014, he brilliantly portrayed James Brown in Get on Up, so it’s likely that he’ll bust a few moves during his SNL monologue. Beyond that, it will be interesting to see if Boseman references his most famous movie character throughout the show, or if the SNL writers give him mostly original material to work with. SNL did reference Wakanda, the home of T’Challa, earlier this season and gave fellow Black Panther star Sterling K. Brown a parody sketch. But who knows - Boseman just may surprise die-hard fans even more if he vibes with SNL’s cast, and he’s undoubtedly got the clout to become the film industry’s perennial blockbuster boss for action comedies. This April, a new journey begins.
