Chadwick Boseman is reuniting with his Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo for the upcoming thriller 17 Bridges. Boseman’s career has taken off thanks to his debut as T’Challa, aka Black Panther, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He made his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War in 2016 and then reprised his role in his Black Panther solo movie earlier this year.
Black Panther, which was released in February 2018 and directed by Ryan Coogler, swept viewers off their feet and made an outstanding box office revenue of over $1.3 billion. The movie received an impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and further worked to fuel excitement surrounding T’Challa’s return in Infinity War – the latest addition in the Avengers series, directed by the Russo Brothers. It looks like the actor enjoyed his time working the Russos in the MCU that they’re all expanding their careers together outside the superhero genre.
Variety reports that Boseman will produce and star in 17 Bridges, from Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk and writer Adam Mervis. While they won’t be directing this new production, it’s also been confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo will produce the film. In a statement made by the chairman of STXfilms, the studio has focused on assembling what they deem to be the “dream team of collaborators” for the project:
17 Bridges will feature Boseman as a disgraced detective within the NYPD who finds himself quickly thrown into a citywide manhunt for a murderer. As the plot unravels and becomes more complicated, Boseman’s character has to decide who he’s actually hunting and who is hunting him. The announcement of the production of the film has definitely gained quite a bit of attention, and not just due to the big names behind the scenes. It’s been reported that Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., and Universal Pictures were also aiming to grab the project for themselves, but were ultimately beaten to it by STX.
“Chadwick Boseman’s razor-sharp instincts and undeniable charisma captivated millions of people around the world in Black Panther, and Joe and Anthony Russo have breathed a new energy into the action genre with films like Avengers: Infinity War. Their unique and intelligent approach to filmmaking is anything but formulaic.”
It’s no surprise that the confirmation of this upcoming thriller has gained quite a lot of audience excitement already, due to the big reputations involved. Boseman has steadily created a strong fan-base throughout the Marvel franchise, and one that’s only seemingly growing with the new productions that his foothold has allowed him to get involved in. Paired with the Russo Brothers as co-producers for the film, it’s evident that there are already going to be rather high expectations for the film to live up to. It’ll be exciting to see what Boseman and the Russo Brothers combined can come up with when 17 Bridges starts filming this fall.
