Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has debunked a rumor that they have three teams working on three separate Cyberpunk games. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most hotly anticipated video games of 2020, with its urban aesthetic, promise of limitless storytelling possibilities, and exciting fusion of FPS action and role-playing mechanics, to say nothing of the appearance of Keanu Reeves in a key supporting role within the game.

Thanks to a translation error regarding a quote from Polish website Bankier, followers of CD Projekt and their titles were mistakenly led to believe the multi-studio development team was hard at work on three different Cyberpunk games. The website ran a quote from CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński, which read, “We’re working on three Cyberpunk things - over the main game and over two more.” However, since the translation came from Google Translate, it failed to articulate the actual meaning of Kiciński’s words.

In an e-mail response to PC Gamer, a representative of the Polish company clarified the confusion; there are five teams at CD Projekt Red, and three of those teams are busy working on Cyberpunk 2077.  CDPR doesn’t have three teams working on different Cyberpunk titles. They also have a dedicated studio working on Gwent, the card-based spin-off of their immensely popular Witcher series, as well as a team working on an as-yet-unannounced mobile title. It’s theoretically possible this is related to Cyberpunk, but CDPR isn’t ready to spill any beans just yet.

In today’s hyper-connected world of rapidly disseminating information, it’s easy for an accidental mistake to become common knowledge. Rumors and misinformation can quickly snowball and lead to out-of-control expectations, even for a game like Cyberpunk 2077, which already commands an unparalleled level of hype. Fortunately, CDPR stepped in and cleared the record quickly, nipping it in the bud before it became “known fact” that Cyberpunk 2077 and its prospective sequels (which haven’t even been announced yet) are concurrently in development.

The truth is, video game development is a labor-intensive process, especially regarding gigantic open-worlds with countless stories to be told. Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a near-future dystopia, Night City, a location built on ambition, broken dreams, and technological advances run amok. It takes the combined efforts of three large studios to create a work of this scale. Rumors and speculation aside, a bit of perspective can be important in this type of situation. Instead of putting the cart before the horse regarding imaginary sequels to a game which isn’t out yet, fans should be focused on the prize right in front of them: the April 16, 2020 release date of Cyberpunk 2077.
