All but confirmed as the director of the Birds of Prey film in Cathy Yan, which is set to star Robbie’s Quinn alongside a slew of DC’s most famous female faces. Based on several reports, this has taken precedence over even Suicide Squad 2, which means the discussion will soon turn to casting. Here’s who we think should fight alongside and against Robbie’s Harley.

Harley Leads Birds of Prey
Obviously, Margot Robbie is going to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in the Birds of Prey movie. Apparently, WB is developing two scripts for the project, both of which prominently feature Harley and Batgirl. The other characters are different depending on the script, meaning that the film’s two key pillars, character-wise, are Barbara Gordon and the erstwhile Dr. Quinzel.
Margot Robbie as Harley is a proven asset. It’s undeniable that she played a significant part in bringing Suicide Squad to an unexpectedly high $746 million worldwide, not too far off from Batman v Superman’s $873 million total and that’s without a release in China, which outright refused to allow the movie into the country. Since Suicide Squad’s release in 2016, Robbie’s star has only continued to rise, complete with an Oscar-nominated turn in the awards season darling, I, Tonya.
Which Characters Will Join Harley Quinn In Birds of Prey?
The superhero group, Birds of Prey, was first formed in a mid-1990s one-shot featuring Black Canary and Barbara Gordon. Since then, the roster of heroines on the squad has varied, but the most notable members have always been Black Canary, Oracle (or Batgirl, depending on the state of Barbara’s spine), and Huntress. Over the years, the roster has included a great many female heroes, including Big Barda, Vixen, Hawkgirl, and Lady Blackhawk, who served as the team’s pilot.
This all leads to the question: who else will be in the film? It’s hard to imagine any Birds of Prey team without its core trio of Black Canary, Huntress, and Barbara Gordon. Beyond that, it’s been speculated that elements from the in-flux Gotham City Sirens film may be incorporated, meaning characters like Poison Ivy and Catwoman could play a role in Cathy Yan’s movie.
While these core characters are seemingly obvious shoo-ins to lead Birds of Prey, this is by no means confirmation that they will factor into the story of the still-in-development movie. That being said, when it comes to our Bird of Prey casting, they’re who we’re going to run with.
Batgirl Ashley Greene
The most sought-after role in Hollywood right now might just be Barbara Gordon, otherwise known as Batgirl. One big reason for the existence of this Birds of Prey movie is to spin-off its leads into solo films of their own. In fact, the Batgirl movie was first announced a year ago, with Joss Whedon set to write and direct (though he recently dropped out of the project). Now, it seems like she’ll make her debut in Birds of Prey before headlining her own flick.
Ashley Greene already has experience in the role due to her stellar performance in the popular video game, Batman: Arkham Knight. The main story of the game is set long after the young Ms. Gordon is shot in the spine by The Joker, and she aids Batman as her alter ego, Oracle. The prequel DLC, A Matter of Family, on the other hand, starred Batgirl at the height of her strength. Ashley Greene is a strong actor with the charm to turn Batgirl into a franchise all her own, independent of whatever behind-the-scenes drama may or may not be impacting Ben Affleck’s future as the Bat-family patriarch.
Huntress Sofia Boutella
Depending on the continuity, Huntress’ backstory changes, but the most popular version - and the one most closely associated with the Birds of Prey - is Helena Bertinelli, the daughter of a mob boss who turns vigilante after her family is killed in a hit. The character experienced a resurgence in popularity when she was adapted in The CW’s Arrow, played by Jessica De Gouw, though she hasn’t made a physical since season two of the popular series.
For the DCEU, Sofia Boutella (Kingsman, The Mummy) seems the obvious shout for the role of a violent mob daughter with a mean streak. Sofia is Algerian, and her backstory could easily be changed from being a mafia princess to the child of an international criminal kingpin offering the film a more global scale and expanding the scope of the action beyond the gritty streets of Gotham City.
Black Canary Priyanka Chopra
On the Arrowverse, Katie Cassidy stars as Laurel Lance, better known as the Black Canary. Clad in a black leather getup and armed with a pair of police-style tonfas and her signature Canary Cry sonic wave attack, she took over crime-fighting duties after the death of her sister, Sara. What a movie version would mean for Cassidy is unclear (Arrow ditched Harley Quinn when Suicide Squad entered production), but you can’t do Birds of Prey without her.
To play the movie version of Laurel, the prime pick is Priyanka Chopram, one of the biggest TV stars on the planet thanks to her role in the high-adrenaline ABC series, Quantico. An international star with sizeable fandoms in America, South Asia, and beyond, the casting of Chopra would potentially go a long way towards expanding international prospects for Birds of Prey, to say nothing of her exceptional skills as an actor, which have earned her two People’s Choice Awards for her work on Quantico.
Poison Ivy Eleanor Tomlinson
Without a synopsis, cast, or even a completed script, it’s hard to guess whether Harley Quinn will be forced to play nice, as in Suicide Squad, or if she will be allowed to be a free-wheeling and compelling of the story. Either way, if the movie even flirts with the Sirens she should get to share some scenes with Poison Ivy, one of Gotham City’s most formidable rogues. Armed with the power to control men with her powerful pheromones and possessing a particular affinity with all plant life, Poison Ivy has potential to imbue Birds of Prey with supernatural visual splendor without being too over the top (ahem, Enchantress).

Eleanor Tomlinson is only 25 years old and relatively unknown, but she still has an impressive résumé, which includes films like Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Jack the Giant Slayer, as well as BBC programs like The Sarah Jane Chronicles and Poldark. There’s enough in her roles to suggest suitable talents for the seductive Ivy, and little star baggage.
Catwoman Natalie Zea
When it comes to the women of DC comics, few are more iconic than Catwoman. From Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt to Michelle Pfeiffer and Anne Hathaway (though, the less said about Halle Berry’s ill-fated Catwoman film, the better), the feline-themed cat burglar has spent plenty of time on TV screens over the past fifty years.
For this version, one should consider that Catwoman is usually romantically-linked with Batman himself; in the DCEU, Bats is played by Ben Affleck, so Catwoman, unless she’s supposed to be “the next generation of thief”, should be within Affleck’s age range. Natalie Zea is only two years younger than Batfleck, so could easily play opposite him. Best known for her role on FX’s Justified, she’s got the ability to juggle multiple moods with ease, something that is necessary when playing the Cat.
