Cara Delevingne has shot down hopes of her returning for Suicide Squad 2. Shortly after officially launching the DC Extended Universe last year with Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. expanded upon their burgeoning universe by following up Snyder’s film with David Ayer’s Suicide Squad later that summer, which focused on a group of supervillains who conduct covert government operations in order to cut time off their prison sentences.

Suicide Squad was one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and after the critical disappointment of the first two DCEU movies, people looked to the third chapter as some sort of saving grace. Unfortunately, the movie was just as critically maligned as Batman V Superman, with many critics citing the film’s haphazard editing and lackluster villain as its worst flaws. However, audience reactions were decidedly mixed, with roughly half the people agreeing with critics and the other half admittedly enjoying the film – though many people would agree that the Enchantress probably wasn’t the right choice for the villain.

Leading into the movie, many people thought Jared Leto’s Joker was going to be the main villain (something Ayer has since admitted would have been the right choice), though it wasn’t until later that they realized that Delevingne’s Dr. June Moone, aka the Enchantress, was the titular enemy. In the end of the movie, the Enchantress’ heart had been cut out, and then Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) crushed it, thereby returning Dr. Moone. Although her character is still alive, Delevingne told USA Today she’s “pretty sure” she won’t return for the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel:

Suicide Squad may not have been the movie that critics and many audiences were hoping for, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t commercially successful. The blockbuster movie grossed over $745 million at the worldwide box office (without releasing in China) against an estimated production budget of $175 million - thanks in large part to Margot Robbie playing Harley Quinn in the character’s first-ever live-action appearance, as well as Will Smith providing his star-power as Deadshot.

“It was a life-changing experience and, of course, I’d do another one, but I don’t think it would make sense for the character. I’ll probably still be on the set hanging out with everyone.”

The film’s box office success convinced the studio not only to pursue another Suicide Squad film but also a Gotham City Sirens movie, which Ayer will direct with Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, as well as a potential Deadshot spinoff. Although there’s still quite a bit we don’t know about the latter two movies, Suicide Squad 2 will reportedly enter production in mid-2018, with The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra the current frontrunner to helm the sequel. The studio is expected to discuss their future DCEU slate at San Diego Comic-Con this week, so be sure to check back for any information on Suicide Squad 2 – but at this time, people shouldn’t expect Delevingne to return.
