Fast and Furious is about family and fireworks. And by fireworks we mean gravity-defying vehicle stunts and all-out action, whether that involves weaponized cars, airplanes, or remote controlled vehicle armies. And that held true last night’s celebration of the opening of Universal Orlando Resort’s new attraction, Fast & Furious Supercharged.
That action and adventure extends beyond Universal Pictures’ mega-successful and continually evolving film franchise. There’s an animated series on the way coming to Netflix from DreamWorks, and as of last month, the Fast & Furious Supercharged attraction now exists at both Universal Studios parks.
Originally opened as part of The World-Famous Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2015, Fast & Furious Supercharged has made its way to Orlando as a standalone attraction, adding new footage and an elaborate queue system that supports both Express Pass and the new Virtual Line system where attendees can select a specific return time and party size, and spend less time in line.
For the official grand opening yesterday (the ride actually opened nearly two weeks ago), several members of the Fast family showed up in style on stage, including Jordana Brewster, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and Tyrese Gibson. Then the main man (and producer) of the franchise joined in the festivities.
Diesel joined some of his Fast & Furious series co-stars for a celebratory moment reminiscent of the Fast & Furious films – featuring high-speed car action and an amazing stunt in front of the attraction. The moment culminated with a countdown led by the franchise’s superstars and an explosive pyrotechnics display.
This is how that went down:
Brewster and Ludacris are two new additions to the East Coast Supercharged attraction, each having shot footage that’s new to the ride and featured in several segments of the queue where there are also live actors. Tyrese and Vin Diesel are part of the main ride (which also features Michelle Rodriguez, Luke Evans, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) which is the same footage from Universal Studios Hollywood from 2015, with the exception of a changed background (they made it San Francisco since the attraction is in the San Fran section of the Orlando park) and the removal of 3D (they’re opting for HDR in this version).
For Universal Orlando, this marks two back-to-back premieres with Voodoo Doughnuts also having its grand opening May 1st at Universal Orlando’s CityWalk.
