Captain Marvel’s working title is revealed to be Open World. Announced in 2014 as Marvel Studios laid out their Phase 3 blueprint, it was only two years ago when Brie Larson was finally confirmed to headline MCU’s first solo female-led superhero flick. Tackling the origins of Carol Danvers’ version of the famed comic book character, the film directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden is set to shoot in California with additional filming scheduled in  Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

As the twin Avengers sequels Infinity War and Avengers 4 wrapped production last month, Marvel Studios is moving forward into the filming Captain Marvel due next year. We’ve already gotten a glimpse of Larson on-set, sporting her superhero uniform (albeit quite a different one from her usual garb) but we still haven’t had the chance to spot any of the supporting cast. Prior to the start of official principal photography, the film was slowly filling up its casting sheet, adding Jude Law as Captain Mar-Vell, Ben Mendelsohn, supposedly playing the movie’s main antagonist and Dewanda Wise. Set in the ’90s, predating the events of Iron Man, the project will also feature a two-eyed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

A posting from Production Weekly for this week lists Captain Marvel with its working title: Open World. Much like every single thing in the MCU, chances are likely that the production title is anything but random. It could pertain literally to Earth opening up for extraterrestrials to come in and possibly wreak havoc. After all, it’s already been confirmed that the Kree-Skrull war will play a role in the upcoming Marvel origins story. Should that be the case, it corroborates with early theories about the Skrull and/or Kree possibly descending to Earth in the hopes of taking it over.

The Quantum Realm, the alternate dimension where time and space don’t exist from Ant-Man, can also potentially be its hidden meaning. After all, Marvel’s consultant, Quantum physicist Dr. Spiros Michalaki confirmed that the Quantum Realm will appear in Captain Marvel. Another possible meaning to it, albeit in a more personal sense, is Danvers’ own world opening up to new adventures after being caught in the Kree device explosion that gave her superpowers.

However it pans out, we expect that Captain Marvel and what happened to Danvers will play a significant role in the still-untitled Avengers 4 film set to follow the standalone. The fact she’s been inhabiting the MCU for quite a while and we’ve never heard anything about her is a central mystery that hopefully is building towards a worthwhile payoff. Further down the road and as the franchise starts a new chapter once Phase 3 wraps up, the character will be among the new wave of superheroes that will be at the forefront of the storied series alongside newcomers like Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch).
