Marvel Studios will finally show how Nick Fury lost his eye in Captain Marvel. Samuel L. Jackson made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the post-credits scene of Iron Man in 2008, but he was already the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. at that time. In just a few months, audiences will get to see a completely different side of the eye-patch wearing leader via his younger self.

Captain Marvel takes place in 1995, and is allowing Marvel to use their prominent deaging technology on Jackson to play a version of Nick Fury that’s still largely stuck at his desk. While his personality may be more optimistic than fans have typically seen, the most notable difference for many will be his physical appearance. Not only is he younger, but he’ll have both eyes in the movie. It’s long been believed that this appearance could allow Marvel to explore what happened to Fury’s eye in Captain Marvel.

Jackson has confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight during their set visit of Captain Marvel that Marvel fans will get to see a lot of Fury’s origin in the film. The movie will touch on his family life and past experience in the military, but how he lost his eye will also be addressed. Jackson said, “You’ll see, specifically, the origin of what happened to his eye.”

This is a welcome bit of confirmation at this stage in the build up to Captain Marvel, especially since it was previously just left up to speculation whether or not it would be addressed. That said, the case for Fury actually losing his eye during the movie has been teased throughout, with him having a bandage above the eye already in several scenes. Now that we know with absolute certainty that Captain Marvel will show how Fury lost his eye, the theories around how it happens will likely pick up.

Some have suggested that it would be quite the gag if Fury lost his eye at the claws of Carol’s cat Goose (who’s actually an alien), as it would completely change the background and meaning of his line in Captain America: The Winter Soldier about the eye loss coming as a result of him trusting someone. Our theory is that the eye could be lost during a scuffle between Fury and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), who’s posing as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Fury’s boss when he isn’t in his Skrull form. Given Jackson’s recent possible confirmation of the Tesseract playing a part in the movie, Fury could also conceivably lose his eye trying to keep possession of the Infinity Stone and fighting off Talos. However it plays out, fans can rest assured that Captain Marvel will reveal the truth behind one of the MCU’s oldest mysteries.
