The Marvel Cinematic Universe is taking a pause, with the wait for Captain Marvel after Ant-Man & The Wasp the longest fans have had since Captain America: Civil War. After two major blockbusters in Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios is looking to close out their monumental 10th-anniversary year with Ant-Man & The Wasp. After that, though, it’s over half a year before the next movie releases.
Directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, the MCU’s first solo female headlining superhero. Set in the ’90s, the movie will also feature Samuel L. Jackson’s two-eyed Nick Fury, Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson, and Lee Pace’s Ronin the Accuser. Aside from Danvers’ introduction, the period piece will highlight the Kree-Skrull war as well. Considering what the debut of Captain Marvel will mean to the MCU moving forward, fans are obviously well-and-ready for her first standalone film. Unfortunately, they would have to wait a little while longer for her arrival.
After Ant-Man & The Wasp hits theaters this week, it will be eight whole months until Captain Marvel, which isn’t due until March 9th, 2019. This makes it the longest wait for a film in the franchise since May 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, coming off of a 10-month-gap. Interestingly, the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed threequel was also preceded by the first Ant-Man released in July 2015. This obviously would be a bit of an adjustment for MCU followers considering that Marvel Studios has regularly come out with a project every few months; since May 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the franchise has had six movies (including Ant-Man 2).
After Captain Marvel, however, it won’t be too long at until the next Marvel movie; Avengers 4 rolls out after just two months later in early May, and then, after only nine more weeks, Phase 4 officially begins with Spider-Man: Far From Home in July. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 poised to take a May 2020 release spot, though, that may mean another long wait is incoming.
This all does beg the question of whether Kevin Feige is dropping the November release slot which Marvel has seen strong recent success with. If that’s the case, Warner Bros. and DC Films could claim the month as their own considering that they’ve previously released Justice League in November of last year and have Wonder Woman 1984 set for the same frame in 2019.
As for Marvel, in case they want or need to release four films (something they’re open in doing) in 12 months, they can easily pick a spot towards the end of the year for its theatrical debut. If anything, Black Panther proved that there’s no such thing as blockbuster season anymore; audiences will come out and see a film they’re genuinely interested in regardless of its release month. At this point, fans can only hope that like Captain America: Civil War, Captain Marvel will be worth the wait.
