Brie Larson’s solo MCU movie Captain Marvel will be an action-comedy according to its screenwriter. As Marvel Studios closes out Phase 3, they will finally do something fans have long been asking for. It’s taken a while, but the studio is finally releasing a female solo movie. They’ve attached Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson to lead, which will reportedly mark her MCU debut - barring a surprise cameo in Avengers: Infinity War. The movie also features Marvel’s first female director, as Anna Boden is co-directing alongside Ryan Fleck.

Production on Captain Marvel is gearing up for a full shoot following a quick week of filming that provided the first look at Larson in costume. With casting still ongoing, fans are still gathering information on what exactly the movie has in store. We know it’ll venture into the cosmos for the Kree/Skrull war, and take place in the 90s, but now we have an idea of what type of movie this will be.

Screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who began writing the script last fall, spoke to EW about the development of Captain Marvel. Following her experience on Tomb Raider, she made the jump to Marvel Studios to tackle another major female-led project. In doing so, she took over the script previously written by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. What they wound up with, according to her, is an action-comedy.

Making Captain Marvel an action-comedy falls right in line with how she’s typically been portrayed in the comics, but also Marvel Studios’ tendencies. Almost all of their films could somehow be described as an action-comedy, with some focusing more on the action and others leaning on the humor. Based on these comments from Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel could be pushing the comedy more. Even if the action-comedy route is somewhat typical of Marvel’s formula, they tend to have a larger tone in mind too. Whereas Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a political thriller and Ant-Man a heist movie, we’ll have to wait and see what else Captain Marvel is.

Captain Marvel has a very funny voice, and it’s more of an action-comedy, more like what we were talking about doing in the first draft I wrote for Tomb Raider…. [but] that tone survived in Captain Marvel. I love funny female characters, so as Tomb Raider got more serious, I got even more committed to the idea of Captain Marvel being hilarious.

This style should also play well to the strengths of the one playing Carol Danvers. Larson may have really broken out with her Oscar-winning role in Room, but she has already proven her complete range. She’s yet to really do an action role, but Captain Marvel shouldn’t be too big of a challenge thanks to Marvel’s expertise and the amount of CGI it will require. Larson is well-versed in comedy on the other hand. Roles in Scott Pilgrim vs The World and 21 Jump Street make that clear. Now it’ll be up to her to mix the comedy, drama, action, etc. into her performance, which shouldn’t be a problem for someone as talented as Larson.
