Jude Law has been cast to play a role in the upcoming Captain Marvel film, but he won’t confirm or deny whether that role is Mar-Vell. Captain Marvel was announced way back in 2013, and we learned that Brie Larson would play the eponymous Captain Marvel at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con. Filming began in January 2018, and the movie is scheduled to be released in March 2019. The film will be directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, in what will be their first collaboration with Marvel Studios.
Named “Protector of the Universe” by Eon, Law’s speculated character, Mar-Vell, is an incredibly powerful superhero in the Marvel Universe. Originally sent as a Kree spy to observe Earth, he adopts the name of recently deceased scientist, Walter Lawson. Although he was originally sent as a spy, he turns against his people. deciding to fight alongside the Avengers and protect humanity. It is his DNA that is fused with Larson’s character, Carol Danvers, allowing her to become Captain Marvel in the first place.
Speaking with EW, Law had the following to say about his rumored role as Mar-Vell: “Yes, it’s been reported I’m playing Mar-Vell. I’m not going to confirm or deny that." Law immediately went on to praise co-star Larson, changing the subject from his own role in the film. He said that he thinks her performance is “going to be absolutely magnificent.” The Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald star had nothing more to say about his role in Captain Marvel, although it is still heavily speculated that it will, in fact, be Mar-Vell. There has even been fan art about what Law’s Mar-Vell would look like.
Brie Larson, who won an Oscar in 2015 for her incredible performance in Room, will be playing what Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, has called “by far the strongest character we’ve ever had”. Her character was teased in the post-credits scene for Avengers: Infinity War, as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) attempted to contact her, before falling victim to Thanos’ infamous purge. It has been announced that Jackson will also be reprising his role as Fury in Captain Marvel, which will be set in the 1990s - a previously unseen period in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As well as Law, Larson, and Jackson, the film will feature Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace (returning as Ronan the Accuser, previously seen as the antagonist in Guardians of the Galaxy) and Gemma Chan, alongside many others. Fans will be especially glad to hear that Clark Gregg will also be returning to reprise his role as fan-favorite, Agent Phil Coulson.
