Before Captain Marvel hits theaters next March, a prelude comic will arrive later this year to help set up the solo adventure - and tie it to Avengers: Infinity War. There’s plenty of built in anticipation for Captain Marvel as its Marvel Studios’ first solo film starring a female. When the studio announced Brie Larson would be starring as Carol Danvers at San Diego Comic-Con last year, excitement only grew. With her solo film set in in the 1990s, she was left out of Infinity War, up until the post-credits scene when Nick Fury paged her as his last act before Thanos’ snap dusted him.

Since the tease, fans have been wondering what Captain Marvel has been up to for the years in between her solo film and what will be her second MCU appearance in Avengers 4. The other major question is why Fury waited until this event to call in the first superhero he ever met. Thanks to a prelude comic for Captain Marvel, some of those questions could be answered.

Marvel announced the official Captain Marvel Prelude comic today, and it will focus on Nick Fury and Maria Hill’s final moments. The issue will be released on November 14 and is a special 32-page one shot written by Will Corona Pilgrim, with art by Andrea Di Vito. Here is the official synopsis for the issue and the cover:

Unlike most of Marvel’s movie prelude comics, Captain Marvel’s appears to serve as more of an Infinity War wrap up or Avengers 4 tease than a prequel to her solo movie. The description for the issue likely teases a replay of Infinity War’s final moments, but may also give more context on what Fury and Hill have been up to recently. They’ve been completely absent from Phase 3 up until Infinity War’s post-credits, so there’s surely some adventures worth telling.

Before CAROL DANVERS takes flight in 2019’s first Marvel Studios film, immerse yourself in this all-new adventure! Spinning out of the mysterious events of Avengers: Infinity War, NICK FURY and MARIA HILL set off on life-or-death missions that lead directly to the appearance of CAPTAIN MARVEL!

The most intriguing element is how the mission they are on leads directly to Captain Marvel’s arrival. The current cover has a picture of Fury from Infinity War on it, indicating a present day setting for the issue. If these missions Fury and Hill are on do lead right up to the appearance of Carol, then will the issue show her answering Fury’s call in the present day? If it does, whatever they show may be nothing more than a tease of Avengers 4, as Marvel’s prelude comics can be hit or miss with the info they include. Some just recap prior movies, but maybe Captain Marvel’s will be different. Fans will get to know for sure come later this year.
