Captain Marvel has officially begun filming. Brie Larson has actually been playing the part for some time now; although the character isn’t expected to appear in Infinity War, she plays a major role in next year’s Avengers 4. Captain Marvel has been described as Marvel’s most powerful hero to date, and she’s sure to give Thanos a fight.

Unusually, Captain Marvel’s solo film is actually set in the ’90s. It will feature the much-anticipated return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, and will see the ancient Kree-Skrull War come to Earth. Our planet will essentially become No Man’s Land in a millennia-old war between two ruthless alien empires. Fans have been eager to learn how this story weaves into the MCU’s history, and whether or not any key Marvel characters - such as Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson - could appear.

In an official press release, Marvel has confirmed that production has finally begun on Captain Marvel. The film will shoot in and around the greater Los Angeles area, and in other locations including Fresno, California, and Louisiana. Excitingly, Marvel has confirmed a handful of key actors who will be reprising their roles. Clark Gregg will be playing a younger version of Agent Coulson; meanwhile, Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace will be reprising their Guardians of the Galaxy roles as Korath the Pursuer and Ronan the Accuser, respectively.

Marvel’s press release for Captain Marvel included an official photo of Larson taking pilot training from Brigadier General Jeannie Leavitt, 57th Wing Commander, at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. The titular hero is an Air Force pilot who gains super-powers after exposure to alien energies, and Marvel has been keen to see Larson trained as a pilot so she can accurately play the role. An official synopsis for Captain Marvel was also included with the press release:

It’s certainly going to be fascinating to see how Captain Marvel weaves into the MCU’s timeline. Coulson has been strongly tied to the Kree thanks to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - the Kree are currently the main villains in season 5 - so Gregg’s return to the big screen in the MCU is particularly exciting. Fans have long wondered when Marvel’s TV shows and movies would link together again, and revealing an unseen element of Coulson’s past may well be the first step.

“The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.  Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
