Marvel Studios is currently in an unfamiliar situation. While production schedules on Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok overlapped a tad, they are currently filming Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War – plus the fourth Avengers film – at the same time. The former two-part event will keep the studio busy for an entire year, while Ant-Man and the Wasp will also enter production this summer, presumably after Black Panther wraps. Once these films are completed, and some just months away from theatrical releases, it will be Brie Larson who gets the spotlight.

Captain Marvel will be Marvel’s first female-led film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before she suits up to film her solo series, Larson will be involved with the year-long Avengers production. So when will Larson begin working on her solo film? Possibly next January.

Atlanta Filming on Twitter, an account dedicated to celebrity sightings, set photos, and staying on top of production schedules, suggested that Captain Marvel may start filming in Atlanta in January of 2018. However, he notes that both the location and start date are just rumors as of right now.

So, this is a rumor, #CaptainMarvel MIGHT start filming in Atlanta in January; both the location and date are rumors.— Atlanta Filming (@AtlantaFilming) February 14, 2017

If Captain Marvel is to start filming next January, that gives Marvel Studios plenty of time to find the director they’ve been searching for. Despite promises of an announcement coming at various points in 2016, the director’s chair is still vacant with the latest report saying Marvel is no rush to make a decision. They should however come to a decision within the next couple of months to give the director proper time to work in pre-production.

This start date also coincides with Marvel’s tendency to start production on a film roughly a year ahead of its release. As Captain Marvel has a March release date attached, January would fall in line with that schedule. Another point of interest is that Captain Marvel will possibly film in Pinewood Studios in Atlanta. While this has become the regular home for nearly all Marvel Studios’ productions, previous reports pointed to the film heading to Australia, just like Thor: Ragnarok.

Assuming Larson is heavily involved in the back half of filming on the next two Avengers movies, this start date would give her little time off before she had to jump back into costume. The shooting schedule for Captain Marvel may also cross paths with Marvel’s set reshoot period on their films, which would only further keep Larson busy.
