Captain Marvel is currently filming, and Kevin Feige has called her origin story one of the most unique in the MCU. Brie Larson’s Air Force pilot turned Earth defender is currently filming in California. The film’s stars turned up at the Avengers: Infinity War premiere full of excitement and praise for their upcoming turn on the big screen bringing the prequel to life. Fresh off the wave of the success of Black Panther, Marvel is aiming to bring their first female-centered story to the big screen in 2019.
The studio is slowly releasing information, painting a clear picture of what’s to come for fans. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg has started filming his role as Agent Coulson. He’s joined by returning stars Lee Pace as Ronan, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, and Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury. Captain Marvel will be introducing a new cast of characters played by the likes of Lashawna Lynch, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn, and McKenna Grace. It’s promised a ’90s setting, high flying Air Force action, and a possible look deeper into the cosmic portion of the MCU that Marvel wants to explore.

According to Kevin Feige, it’s also promising one of the most unique origin stories in the MCU. The head of Marvel studios paused on Avengers: Infinity War’s red carpet and discussed the heroine’s upcoming picture. Feige expressed a great deal of praise for the cast and crew, sharing that they had an early call time that day and wrapped early to get the stars to Infinity War on time. He shared that they’d be back at work early Tuesday, excited by the film’s progress. He called Carol the most powerful superhero they’ve introduced in the MCU with one of the most unique origin stories they’ve ever produced.
Captain Marvel will be debuting in her solo movie and returning to the screen for Avengers 4. Captain Marvel has a lot that already makes it special and her presence or lack thereof has been the subject of quite a bit of speculation. Her origin story might also introduce a number of secondary characters who could play major roles in the future of the MCU as it looks toward Phase 4. Even if Captain Marvel doesn’t perform as well as Marvel’s other beloved properties it will be a pivotal film for the MCU.
The blockbuster success of DC’s Wonder Woman proved there was much interest in female-led superhero films, and Feige has even admitted he regrets WB beating Marvel to the punch in that regard. However, the MCU is starting to make strides, and it looks like the franchise’s future will be female. In addition to Captain Marvel, Marvel is finally starting development on the in-demand Black Widow solo film, and a number of the series’ actresses (including Tessa Thompson) have pitched an all-women team-up film to Feige - a prospect that interests him. This year’s Black Panther also gave the MCU several strong female characters that should return in upcoming projects, so Marvel is certainly making their future just as unique as Carol’s origin story.
