Captain Marvel has received the Wonder Woman 1984 treatment, but with a 1990s twist in some newly released fan-art. Directed by the partnership of Half Nelson’s Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the blockbuster starring Brie Larson in the title role isn’t due to hit screens until 2019. But that hasn’t stopped some fans from already humorously envisioning how that might look.
It’s no secret that Captain Marvel will be set in the early-’90s, which was even hinted at in the post-credit scene of Infinity War. Featuring some earlier iterations of such established characters as Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), and Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), the film is set to offer a glimpse at a never-before-seen time-period within the MCU, particularly when Carol Danvers finds herself at the center of an intergalactic conflict between two alien races. It’s a plot that could potentially be adapted from the Secret Invasion story from the comics. And now, fans are already starting to imagine what the movie’s ’90s-themed promotional material would look like.
Reddit user, iRaNson, edited a promotional image from Patty Jenkin’s Wonder Woman 1984 to demonstrate what else Captain Marvel (and audiences) could be confronted with over the course of her adventure, featuring such nostalgia-bait as Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Nirvana performing at MTV Unplugged, Friends, and even Tamagotchis. Check it out below.
Pop culture references are nothing new to the MCU, with Tony Stark offering everyone a nickname, from Thor’s Point Break to Hawkeye’s Legolas; even Steve Rogers manages to understand some of them. Most notably, the references come into play in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, when the titular captain maintained a helpful list of movies, music, and television shows he needed to catch-up on.
The parallels between Captain Marvel and Captain America will undoubtedly not end there, especially with the former rumored to be assuming a more of leadership role in the MCU post-Avengers 4. Comparisons between Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman are equally inevitable, since both films portray strong, female leads outside of the established era of the wider franchises as they deal with otherworldly threats. It’s a fact that will no doubt fuel further debate and arguments between those who insist on pitting Marvel and DC against each other.
With wildly differing tones, however, both movies and heroines are sure to be distinct. And, though there is nothing to suggest that Captain Marvel will be as similarly displaced in time as Steve Rogers, it’s hard to imagine that the filmmakers will pass on such an obvious opportunity to mine the ’90s era for all its comedically and nostalgically worth.
