Marvel’s Captain Marvel has found its Doctor Minerva in Humans star Gemma Chan. Fans have been waiting for a Captain Marvel movie for many years, and it’s finally coming in 2019. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing the film based on a script from Geneva Robertson-Dworet and a story from Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve, with Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson playing Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel.
Captain Marvel is expected to start filming in March, but the acclaimed comic book movie studio shot a few scenes in late January in order to retain the company’s California tax incentive. And that’s when fans got their first look at Larson in costume as Captain Marvel thanks to a handful of leaked photos from the set, though her outfit wasn’t exactly her comic book costume. That’s something she’ll most likely get towards the end of the film. While audiences may have to wait a tad bit longer to get clear details on the film, it seems Marvel has made another casting decision ahead of their official production start date.
Deadline reports that Humans star Gemma Chan has been cast as Doctor Minerva in Marvel’s Captain Marvel film. She joins Jude Law, Samuel L Jackson, DeWanda Wise, Robert Kazinsky, and Ben Mendelsohn as part of the film’s supporting cast.
At the moment, it’s unclear how big of a role Chan will have in the film, but considering that her character is integral to understanding the Kree physiology and the fact that she has superpowers similar to that of Captain Marvel, Chan’s Doctor Minerva just might be vital to helping Larson’s Carol Danvers understand her newfound powers. But that doesn’t mean she will be Carol’s ally. In fact, she might just become a nemesis who could return in future sequels (think: Doctor Strange’s Mordo), especially since she’s not expected to play the film’s main villain.
Mendelsohn is rumored to be playing Captain Marvel’s titular villain, though he’s been playing coy about the job ever since reports surfaced of his involvement in the 2019 Marvel film. Whatever the cast may be, fans shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to find out who’s playing who, and what their roles are in the movie (at least how big of a role they will have), seeing as Captain Marvel is slated to officially enter production within the next few weeks. One thing’s for sure, Chan’s casting announcement certainly won’t be the last.
