Captain Marvel actress Lashana Lynch reveals that Carol Danvers has been presumed dead after her initial disappearance in the upcoming Marvel flick. Playing Maria Rambeau, the actress took over the role after DeWanda Wise, who was cast to portray the character originally, backed out due to a scheduling conflict. Said to be one of Carol’s oldest and best friends, Maria is also a capable U.S. Air Force pilot, as well as a single mother.
Maria is one of the most important relationships that Carol leaves behind on Earth when she’s whisked off to outer space to join the Kree, where she eventually becomes a Starforce member. Not much is known regarding how she left her home planet but trailers for Captain Marvel have revealed that by the time she comes back, she has no memory of her old life. Turns out, those she’s left behind, including Maria, believed she was dead following her disappearance.
Speaking with Screen Rant during a visit to the set of Captain Marvel, Lynch provided a bit of background to Maria and Carol’s relationship and how her character was affected when the latter unexpectedly disappeared. Throughout the conversation, she also revealed that between the time that Carol disappeared and she returned, she’s presumed to have died. Lynch didn’t give a specific time-frame as it’s something she’s not allowed to say, but she confirmed that it’s been a very long time - enough for Maria to have finally moved on from the mystery of her best bud’s disappearance.
When asked how long it’s been since Carol disappeared from Earth, Lynch was less forthcoming, not offering a specific number. However, Lynch did say, “A long time, a really long time … enough for me to come out of denial and then think that maybe she is alive, and then no, actually she isn’t yet years have gone by, and she definitely isn’t alive. Do you know what I mean? Enough to go through that cycle.” So even if Lynch doesn’t offer a specific length of time, we can presume it was at least a few years or so.
Her and Brie’s [Larson] character Carol Danvers are very close friends, they’re best friends, in fact. She had to go through a lot of grief when Carol disappeared and then suddenly she’s back, and she has to kind of reverse that grief and make it work for this, picking up of a friendship, which is kind of strange but ends up really beautifully.
Further elaborating on the dynamic between the pair, Lynch talked about a certain kind of sisterly bond that fans have yet to see in an MCU film. The actress also hints at the relationship between Carol and Maria’s child, Monica Rambeau - the first female character to carry the mantle of “Captain Marvel” (no narrative connection to Mar-Vell) and later adapts to slew of superhero personas such as Spectrum.
Aside from Carol and Maria’s bond, Lynch’s particular comment about the connection between Maria and Captain Marvel is sure to hype up fans with regard to the superhero’s future in the MCU. At this point, Marvel Studios will be introducing a roster of brand new characters that could be the face of the franchise as the old guards bow out via Avengers: Endgame. Introducing one of the potential biggest power players in the film series through Captain Marvel will be an interesting way to do that.
They have a very dry humor together. They’re kind of… you know when you love someone and you pretend like you hate them? They have that little bit of a slightly unlikely boisterous, yet very loving, deeply loving, caring sister love. They have a sisterhood about them that is really nice to see in a Marvel movie. Carol Danvers is someone who is an aunt to my child, like she is family and that’s why her death take such a big effect on her life because she actually is her life. They’re in a male-orientated environment and industry, and all they have is each other, those female fighter pilots. So yeah, they’re extremely close, extremely.
