Captain Marvel star Brie Larson may not be able to fly through space, but a new training video shows that she’s in pretty great shape for a non-superhero. The Oscar-winning Room actress will make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in March 2019, and the trailers for Captain Marvel have promised a breathtaking origin story for the character before she teams up with her fellow MCU superheroes in Avengers: Endgame.
While the stars of the MCU have the benefit of stunt doubles and VFX when it comes to their characters’ amazing feats, they still have to go through serious training to get into fighting form. Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has a background in dance and gymnastics, and famously auditioned for the role of Peter Parker by doing back flips at every possible opportunity. Meanwhile Thor’s Chris Hemsworth gets his Norse god physique through a mix of bodybuilding and martial arts-based training, while bulking up on a protein-rich diet.
Not to be left behind, Larson shared an amazing video on social media in which she ascends a climbing wall and then dangles upside-down, crawling across the ceiling in what she jokingly describes as a “self tape for the role of Spider-Man.”
Well, that’s not exactly the kind of superhero landing that Deadpool had in mind, but even Spider-Man has taken a few embarrassing tumbles. In Captain Marvel, Larson plays former U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who loses her memory and ends up fighting in the elite Kree military team Starforce. When a war with the Kree’s fiercest cosmic enemies, the shape-shifting Skrulls, brings Carol back to Earth, she begins to recover her memories and meets younger versions of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury and Phil Coulson.
Once she is imbued with her Binary powers, Captain Marvel has the ability to fly through space and project devastating beams of energy. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has said that Captain Marvel is “more powerful than any character we’ve introduced thus far,” and that her arrival in Avengers: Endgame will “change the balance of power in a way that they desperately need.”
The combined forces of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy failed to stop Thanos from completing the Infinity Gauntlet and wiping out half of all life in the universe in Avengers: Infinity War. With the Avengers’ numbers now seriously depleted, having lost heavy-hitters like Vision and Black Panther, the superhero team is looking a little thin. However, in a post-credits scene Nick Fury managed to use an old-school pager to send an S.O.S. call to Carol before he to turned to dust, so the Avengers are about to gain a powerful ally - especially if the next battle against Thanos calls for climbing skills.
