IMDB releases its list of 2019’s most anticipated movies, and in an unsurprising result, Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 have taken the top spots. 2018 is very close to its own endgame, but with the close of one year comes both a fond farewell to the great pieces of pop culture it offered, and a happy hello to the many exciting movies and TV shows 2019 will have to offer. On the small screen, things like Game of Thrones’ final season, Stranger Things season 3, and True Detective season 3 look to make waves.

Meanwhile, on the big screen, the line-up of movies set to hit theaters in 2019 is one of the most formidable of the decade so far, including three MCU installments, two DC films, what look to be the last gasps of Fox’s X-Men universe before its sale to Disney, a new Toy Story sequel, and two prominent Stephen King adaptations, and that’s just scratching the surface of the films already announced for release in 2019.

For better or worse, IMDB is one of the leading authorities online when it comes to movies, and as it does every year, the site has just released its list of the 10 most anticipated movies of 2019. IMDB based the rankings on both page views and its specialized “MOVIEmeter” scores. While it’s not a shock that Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 took the top spots on the list, what might surprise some is that Captain Marvel took #1, being deemed more anticipated than Avengers 4. Considering all the rampant secrecy and fan speculation around the recently titled Avengers: Endgame, one wonders why it came up short in this metric.

Another fairly surprising placement is that of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which grabbed the #3 spot on IMDB’s list of 2019’s most anticipated movies. While normally a new X-Men film would be a natural to appear on a list like this, there’s a lot of fan trepidation generally associated with director Simon Kinberg’s delayed retelling of the story that X-Men: The Last Stand failed at getting right. Other superhero films making the list include Glass at #7, Joker at #8, and Hellboy - which just received its first trailer earlier today - at #10.

Filling out the rest of the list are Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood at #4, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman at #5, IT: Chapter Two at #6, and Disney’s live-action Aladdin at #9. Conspicuous by their absences are 2019’s other MCU release, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and DC’s other 2019 release, Shazam!. Also kind of surprising to see not show up is the aforementioned Toy Story 4, but then again, there are only 10 spots. Either way, this list just serves to further illustrate how much of an embarrassment of riches 2019 looks to be for movie fans.
