Marvel Studios confirms that Captain Marvel 2 is on the way. After years of waiting, Carol Danvers finally made her big screen debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe earlier this year. Played by the Oscar-winner Brie Larson, Captain Marvel became the first female hero to receive a solo movie in the MCU. The importance of this moment drove Captain Marvel to be a mega-hit at the box office, where it earned over $1.1 billion worldwide.
The reception and Carol’s return in Avengers: Endgame a few months later left audiences wanting much more of the character. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige previously said that Captain Marvel would lead the entire MCU moving forward. But, the response to Captain Marvel has not yet seen any reports surface that a sequel is on the way. Captain Marvel 2 was believed to be on the way regardless, and now we have confirmation that it is.
During Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Feige announced that Captain Marvel 2 is officially on the way. While they confirmed that the movie is in development, they did not specify when it will hit theaters. Based on what Marvel did announce during the panel though, we know the movie won’t hit theaters until 2022 at the earliest.
Confirmation that Captain Marvel 2 is on the way should hardly come as a surprise. The movie was a massive hit with audiences and was critically well-received as well. It would be a shocking move for Marvel Studios to not move forward with the franchise, especially when you consider all of the different avenues they have set up for future (or past) stories with the character. But, the movie does still appear to be in the earlier stages of development, as Marvel did not confirm any writers or directors for the sequel.
The point of this announcement was to ensure fans that it is on the way, but it isn’t among the lineup of movies Marvel did confirm. Instead, it joins the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Black Panther 2 as sequels in the works from Marvel, but no additional information was given. This leaves the exact status of Captain Marvel 2’s development unknown, as is when Marvel is eyeing for it to release. When progress is made on the sequel, a 2022 or 2023 release date is most likely in the cards. This would see Captain Marvel 2 hit theaters either 3 or 4 years after the original film, which is a natural sweet spot. If this is the case, then it might be a while before another official update on the sequel arrives.
