Marvel Studios’ Captain America (Chris Evans) gets a super cool fan-made tribute video set to Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” for his birthday. Evans first debuted as Steve Rogers aka. Captain America in the fifth installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain America: The First Avenger. Evans went on to become one of the leaders of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as Captain America in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark aka. Iron Man. Plus, Evans starred in each subsequent team-up movie as well as two more films in the Captain America solo series.
However, Evans’ run as Steve Rogers and Captain America came to an end in this spring’s blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame. Following the Avengers’ victory over Thanos, Captain America went back in time to return all the Infinity Stones to their various points in the continuity. However, instead of returning to the present, Steve went back to the 40s in order to have his dance with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and live out his life. When old man Steve Rogers returned to the present, he bequeathed his Captain America shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), effectively retiring and passing on the mantle to someone else. Now, though the MCU’s Steve Rogers may not be Captain America anymore, celebrated his birthday on July 4th.
In both the Marvel Comics and MCU, Steve Rogers’ birthday is July 4th, sharing the date with Independence Day in the United States, which makes sense for the Star-Spangled Man. As such, every year fans take the opportunity on July 4th to wish Steve a happy birthday - and thanks to the recent release of Avengers: Endgame, they also honored Captain America’s butt. This year, Twitter user Gabi (@harleivy) posted a video tribute they’d made for Evans’ Captain America to celebrate the character’s birthday. Watch the tribute, set to Lil Nas X’s chart-topping hit “Old Town Road” below.
Steve Rogers’ story in the MCU may have come to an end in Avengers: Endgame, but Evans’ Captain America is sure to live on in the minds of fans and the actor himself. There’s been plenty of debate around whether Steve’s ending in the MCU is fitting for his character, or if it ignores key development in more recent movies - like Steve’s relationship with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), who remains alive and well in the present. (In fact, Bucky and Sam are set to lead a Disney+ TV show, Falcon and Winter Soldier.) Still, the fact remains that Evans is most likely done with Captain America in the MCU, barring any surprises in the future.
Many can agree that Evans’ performance as Steve Rogers has become a staple of popular culture thanks to his tenure in the role, even if he passed on the Captain America role to Mackie. While fans are no doubt excited to see what Mackie and Sam Wilson do with the mantle of Captain America in the MCU, Evans and Steve Rogers will be remembered for being the first to pick up the red white and blue shield. And since Steve Rogers shares his birthday with the U.S.’s Independence Day, fans will be able to remember and honor the former Captain America with tributes like this every year.
