Captain America: Civil War was always going to be a massive hit for Disney and Marvel, with what is (in many ways) an Avengers movie squeezed into a Steve Rogers/Captain America (played by Chris Evans) solo outing; and then, combining those elements with Cap’s overarching storyline from Captain America: The First Avenger and the politically-laced Captain America: The Winter Solider. And as predicted, the release of the thirteenth Marvel Studios movie saw it shoot straight to the number one spot at the box office, with a huge turnout for its opening day and weekend release.
Now, just a month into its theatrical run, Civil War has not only topped $1 billion at the worldwide box office, but it will soon be the highest-grossing movie of the year, both domestically and at the global box office. Revolving around differing opinions whether superheroes should surrender themselves to government control or remain independent world protectors, Evans’ Captain America and Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) Iron Man form opposing teams. This forges the film’s main conflict, which has some explosive, jaw-dropping sequences - such as the much talked about airport battle.
And it’s this epic airport scene that one of the two new Civil War TV spots (see above) focus on. During the high-octane sequence where Team Cap and Team Iron Man go head-to-head on the battlefield, not only are we exposed to the brutal efficiency of Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, but we get another glimpse at the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Spider-Man (Tom Holland) in action, as well as Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man transforming into Giant-Man.
The other spot focuses solely on Rogers and Stark’s fractured friendship, showing some of their intense fight scenes as the one-time allies oppose each other firmly in the belief that each is in the right.
The TV spots do a good enough job not to give much away, other than the fact that Ant-Man does indeed blow up to become a huge, towering figure. But in terms of the action, each’s fast-paced TV spot does a solid job of whetting appetites of fans who have yet to still see the film. It’s also a good reminder to those who already have (multiple times, in some cases) as to what an action-packed adventure it is.
As well as seeing the likes of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Vision (Paul Bettany) charge into battle, the impetus is on Spidey and Giant-Man. Not only do we get to relive how amazing his enormous stature is in terms of fighting ant-sized Avengers (which is kind of ironic), but the moments he kicks a bus at Black Panther and destroys an entire plane in the direction of Iron Man are stunning. We also get to see some of Spidey awesome contributions too - notably the point he takes on Giant-Man, slinging his web around his legs a la defeating the AT-ATs in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
