The big MCU battle in Captain America: Civil War is now only a month away. Fans have been slowly getting a better idea of the story and alternate sides of the superhero conflict through trailers, posters, behind-the-scenes videos, and interviews with the cast. The trick for Marvel has been to build enough hype for the movie without giving too much away; how successful they’ve been depends on your tolerance level for spoilers.
Much of the promotion has been on setting up the disagreement about superhero oversight between Captain America and Iron Man, aka Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), that kicks off the civil war between the once united team that fought to protect the world. Later trailers reminded us that this is also a story about Rogers’ friendship with, and protective instincts for, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan).
While most moviegoers know that the rift between Cap and Tony’s ideals became a chasm in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the latest trailer gives us a sense of the bigger picture. Watch the clip above to see the progression of Rogers from that very first decision to submit to an experimental transformation, and Stark creating his first Iron Man suit to escape his captors. We see the arc of these characters as they chose to be heroes, and how their individual choices often caused them to clash from the very beginning.
A key scene in the trailer is Stark telling Rogers “I don’t trust a guy without a dark side,” and Rogers assuring him he just hasn’t seen it yet. Recent interviews with the cast and director Joe Russo revealed that we’ll actually be seeing Stark’s darkest side in Captain America: Civil War, and that many of the characters will make choices that surprise us. One of those surprises may be about how far our squeaky clean hero Captain America will go to defeat his former friend.
While the series of Captain America: Civil War promos have done a lot to create excitement for the super cool battle sequences between the heroes we know and some new introductions, this latest video tells a bigger story that truly creates the goosebump-inducing feel of that climb just before a roller coaster’s biggest drop. We’ve come a long way from Captain America and Iron Man’s origins, and it looks like we’ll soon find out what these two heroes are really made of.
