When it premieres later this year, Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Captain America: Civil War will launch Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the heart of the film is the conflict between Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) over the accountability of superheroes following the events of past films in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, including last summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Civil War is the third film in the Captain America trilogy, all directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and scripted by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The movie will also see the return of a number of MCU heroes including Sam Wilson a.k.a. Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). In a new clip from Captain America: Civil War, these heroes are shown in action.
In the exclusive clip (below) debuted by Evans during the 2016 MTV Movie Awards, Captain America, Falcon, and Scarlet Witch can be seen working together, using their powers to take down a team of body armor-wearing hostiles. The three are in pursuit of Brock Rumlow a.k.a. Crossbones (Frank Grillo), the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who was revealed to be a member of Hydra in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Other MCU characters set to appear in Captain America: Civil War are Natasha Romanoff a.k.a. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Bucky Barnes a.k.a. the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Clint Barton a.k.a. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Vision (Paul Bettany), James Rhodes a.k.a. War Machine (Don Cheadle), and Scott Lang a.k.a. Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). A number of other heroes and villains are set to make their debut into the MCU in the film as well, including Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man (Tom Holland), T’Challa a.k.a. Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), and Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl).
With less than a month left before Captain America: Civil War premieres to general audiences, this MTV clip comes as the marketing push for the Marvel Studios’ film truly heats up. The first reactions to Captain America: Civil War recently hit the Internet, praising the complex storytelling, action sequences, and its ability to bring the spirit of the comic book superheroes to the big screen. Additionally, one of the more anticipated new characters, Spider-Man, is reportedly more involved in Captain America: Civil War than viewers may have expected, with the character being set up for his own solo film due out next year.
All this is to say that Captain America: Civil War is gearing up to be the biggest Marvel Studios release of the year, though it will be followed later in 2016 by the Doctor Strange origin film. Certainly, if the film manages to combine all its parts - beloved superheroes, compelling storytelling, and exciting action beats - it could live up to the overwhelmingly positive first reviews. But, that remains to be seen when Captain America: Civil War hits theaters.
