Captain America: Civil War might not be an Avengers movie, but it does feature more Avengers in one place than we’ve ever seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, they’re not getting on very well with one another. The second entry from Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo sees the superhero team divided over the issue of whether or not they should be free to battle bad guys as soon as they appear, or whether they should wait for permission from the United Nations - and be willing to stand down if that permission isn’t granted.

Between the emotional interplay among all the characters that audiences have come to know and love, the promise of jaw-dropping action scenes including an all-out brawl at an airport, and the introduction of Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) to the fray, there are plenty of reasons to go and see Captain America: Civil War in theaters this weekend. And based on the latest box office numbers, audiences seem to agree.

According to Deadline, Civil War cashed $61 million in ticket sales on Saturday, bringing its opening weekend domestic take up to an estimated $181.8 million. The film has also been performing extremely well in Disney’s second-biggest market, China, where ChinaBoxOffice reports that it debuted with an estimated $96.2 million. The latest Deadline summary puts the movie at a staggering total of $678.39 million worldwide - more than enough to keep Marvel happy, especially if it ends up holding strong over its second weekend.

Though there’s not much overlap at the box office between the two, comparisons are naturally being made between Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice - since both movies feature heavy hitters from their respective comic book universes going head-to-head in superhero-on-superhero warfare. Assuming the estimates hold true, Civil War has edged out Batman V Superman’s $166 million opening weekend, and has already overtaken Batman V Superman’s total Chinese box office gross. Overall, it looks like the latest offering from Marvel studios has a solid chance of passing $1 billion at the box office by the end of its theatrical run.

Next up for Marvel is Doctor Strange, which will feature the debut of Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role as a renowned surgeon who turns to the mystical arts after a car accident cripples his hands. Though Doctor Strange has more of an uphill battle than Captain America: Civil War, since it focuses on a new character whom casual fans might not be familiar with, the strong box office performance of Civil War indicates that interest in the MCU isn’t anywhere close to flagging.
