Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice isn’t the only comic book movie that features two iconic superheroes going face-to-face in one epic showdown in 2016. Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War is due in theaters in about two months, as Disney gets ready to kick-off the summer movie going season this May.

Civil War is the first movie in Phase Three, which will introduce new threats to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The new movie will feature old favorites like Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and War Machine (Don Cheadle), while also showcasing new characters from Marvel’s superhero roster that have yet to be featured in the MCU - namely Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland). With the amount of characters in the new movie, there is some concern that it is starting to resemble “The Avengers 2.5” instead of a proper Captain America 3, but it seems that’s simply not the case.

According to Devin Faraci from Birth. Movies. Death., Marvel has started to screen an unfinished version of Captain America: Civil War and the early buzz suggests that it’s going to be another hit from Marvel Studios and Disney. The new movie is said to feel like a genuine sequel to The Winter Soldier and not a quasi-sequel to Avengers: Age of Ultron. Faraci writes:

“The movie is fully a sequel to The Winter Soldier. I’ve been telling you this for a while, but now that the film is finished it seems to be confirmed - this isn’t Avengers 2.5, but rather Captain America 3, and it truly focuses on Cap and Bucky. I have been told that Spider-Man is great, and that the film doesn’t waste time on retelling his origin. We all get it, and the movie just moves along.”

While Spider-Man appears to be a big standout from Civil War, Black Panther is no slouch himself. People who have watched the movie early have said that the King of Wakanda is a great addition to the Marvel superhero lineup. Faraci continued:

Lastly, it seems that there is some real tragedy between Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in the final act of Civil War. It appears that the epic face-off between Iron Man and Captain America would be a physical and emotional battle for the future of the MCU. Faraci concludes:

“I’ve been told that Black Panther is phenomenal, and that Chadwick Boseman is a major addition to the MCU. This movie picks up the pieces of Avengers: Age of Ultron in surprising and human ways and makes us feel the true cost of Sokovia. And I’ve been told that the last half hour of the film is brutal, both physically and emotionally.”

“One person told me that the last act plays out as an emotional horror movie because the film gives both Tony and Steve solid reasoning, and because it truly makes you feel the depths of this schism.”

It certainly sounds like Marvel Studios has done it again with Captain America: Civil War. While the early buzz seems to be very positive, take this news with a grain of salt until the movie is actually locked and finished. But if the early buzz is correct with Civil War, then Phase Three would be off to a great start with the new superhero additions of Spider-Man and Black Panther.

Captain America: Civil War will release on May 6, 2016, followed by Doctor Strange – November 4, 2016; Guardians of the Galaxy 2 – May 5, 2017; Spider-Man – July 7, 2017; Thor: Ragnarok – November 3, 2017; Black Panther – February 16, 2018; The Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 – May 4, 2018; Ant-Man and the Wasp– July 6, 2018; Captain Marvel – March 8, 2019; The Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 – May 3, 2019; Inhumans– July 12, 2019; and as-yet untitled Marvel movies on May 1, July 10 and November 6, 2020.
