[SPOILERS for Captain America: Civil War ahead.]
-
Marvel Studios’ Phase 3 has officially started now that Captain America: Civil War has been released. The third Captain America movie brought together most of the current line-up of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and introduced newcomers Black Panther and Spider-Man. Civil War also marks the second appearance of heroes the Vision (introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Ant-Man, right after his successful solo movie.
Civil War is packed with action and a few surprises here and there, but one of the top moments of the movie is, without a doubt, the fight between Team Captain America and Team Iron Man at the Leipzig/Halle airport. Here we not only saw Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in action for the first time but there was another superhero that had a trick up his sleeve.
After riding an arrow in order to land on Iron Man’s suit and mess with it from the inside, Scott Lang a.k.a Ant-Man surprised his teammates and the opposite team as well by growing to gigantic proportions, thus becoming Giant Man. Speaking to USA Today, Civil War co-director Anthony Russo shared that the idea of adding Giant Man (an official image of whom has now been released online by USA Today - see below) came after playing with different ideas but “none of them had the potency of that Giant Man beat there.”
Anthony Russo also explained how this new ability plays into Ant-Man’s arc in Civil War:
The airport scene was the one that brought all the superheroes involved in the conflict together, and it required a lot of time in the editing room to make every character and their powers look as they should. Joe Russo explained the scene was filmed on a green screen at an Atlanta backlot, and to create Giant Man the production team combined two techniques: Paul Rudd’s action on set, with a motion-capture performer who would move around at a slow pace (as a giant would), and then all this mapped onto a 50-foot-tall man in post-production.
“He’s just really impressed with Captain America, he just wants to deliver and he figures out a way to deliver where he might actually tear himself in half but he’s willing to do it and it works. It just lined up on a lot of different levels."
The result was one of the greatest fight scenes in the MCU and a truly epic Ant-Man moment that will live on – until he surprises us with something better. Although Giant-Man was rumored to appear long before the movie came out (and even LEGO spoiled it on one of their Civil War sets), it was still one of the top moments of the movie.
