Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War is huge, bringing in massive results at the box office and leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe in disarray as the MCU inches closer to Infinity War. Even though it differed significantly from the comic event that inspired it, the film arguably had a larger impact on the MCU than any film that came before it – even more than the S.H.I.E.L.D.-is-Hydra reveal in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Of course, putting the film together required a lot of preparation and planning before the cameras started rolling. Concept artist Maciej Kuciara has recently started showing off some of the pieces he did for the film, giving fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse of just how the movie progressed from the concept art stage to what we finally saw on the big screen.
Kuciara began posting the pictures to his Facebook account on May 23, the day before the release of the Civil War art book. He has added several more updates since then, including pieces that he did for scenes which weren’t included in the final film. You can see several of his pieces below:
Several of the pieces were posted with Kuciara stating that he didn’t know whether the scenes appeared in the final movie or not. As it turns out, he often doesn’t see the movies that he works on, and still hasn’t seen Civil War. He did know that certain pieces weren’t used by Marvel, however. Kuciara referred to the Civil War job as being a “cornerstone” to his career as a concept artist. Not only did it give him an opportunity to work on a high-profile production, but it also got him into the Art Director’s Guild.
As always, it’s interesting to see how movies evolve from the concept stage to what finally ends up on the screen. In this case, it’s an even more striking comparison because Kuciara’s work is so realistic. At first glance a few of the pieces almost look like scenes from the film, complete with special effects. This obviously makes it much easier to visualize what the depicted scenes would look like in the finished movie, especially in comparison to less detailed production-related art pieces.
Given how well Kuciara captured the look of Civil War’s scenes, fans will likely hope that Marvel brings him back to work on future MCU movies as well. Not only would his art style help bring movies like the upcoming Infinity War films to life, but fans would likely love to see the concept pieces behind more iconic scenes as well. Even if Kuciara doesn’t return to Marvel in the future, at least he (and his fans) will always have a warm spot for what he helped bring to life in Civil War.
