Sebastian Stan believes in the solid friendship of Captain America and Bucky Barnes. As the MCU gears up for its most dangerous threat yet in Thanos, all heroes unify in one goal: to make sure that the Mad Titan or his minions don’t get their hands on the magical Infinity Gems needed to execute their universe-altering plans. Admittedly, while Avengers: Infinity War is all about the big picture, fans are also still very interested in character relationships. After all, the massive franchise is built on its compelling characters and their relationships with each other.

A new Infinity War TV spot offered fans their first glimpse of Bucky and Steve’s reunion following the former’s decision to be placed in cryostasis until Wakandan scientists find a way to totally get him out of the HYDRA program that he was brainwashed with. And as expected, it was the highlight of the said clip, despite other new footage, illustrating people’s emotional investment on the two’s solid friendship. But with two years following their last encounter,  it’s curious what their relationship status is, especially in the aftermath of the events of Captain America: Civil War. Stan’s confident, however, that the men out of time remain very good buddies.

Catching up with Hey U Guys during Infinity War’s red carpet and press event in London yesterday, Stan briefly spoke about Bucky and Captain America’s enduring friendship that started all the way back in the early ‘1900s and long before Steve was gifted with the super soldier serum. Now, after everything that they’ve been through in the last few years, the actor shares that he’s certain that the special bond between the two will continue to stand the test of time, and not even the arrival of Thanos will deter their loyalty to each other. “Well, you know, it’s never gonna go away. That’s history. Your past doesn’t ever leave you. It’s more what you learn to do with it,” he said.

Bucky and Cap’s friendship is one of the most unique and celebrated bonds in the MCU due to its ripple effect in the MCU. Steve’s refusal to bail on his oldest pal brought him serious problems and even cost him his status as an American hero. But he’s willing to let go of everything just to make sure that he’s able to keep his best friend safe. In hindsight, despite everything that has transpired in the Captain America trilogy, the two’s relationship is ultimately the threequel’s foundation. Now that they’re moving to face a bigger threat, there is no doubt that both of them are willing to sacrifice themselves for the other.

Ironically, it feels like as Cap’s story starts its end (he’s poised to bite the bullet in the next twin Avengers sequel), Bucky’s seems like it’s just beginning. Whether that includes him taking over the Captain America mantle or not remains to be seen, but regardless, it appears as if the MCU is positioning him right now to become the second-generation of lead heroes that will usher the MCU to its new chapter. Black Panther’s stinger alludes to the notion - with him taking on a different persona as the White Wolf and no longer the villainous Winter Soldier. Bucky’s character trajectory in the franchise may be very slow, but if it means that fans will still able to see him past Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, then the slow burn may be worth it considering his storied history.
