Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War is still weeks away, though positive reviews are already coming in. Almost everyone who’s appeared in a Marvel film in the past seems to be in the movie (save for Thor and The Hulk), as well as newcomers such as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther.
One of the heroes that didn’t make the cut, though, was Hope Van Dyne, a.k.a. The Wasp. She apparently appeared in at least one draft of the script, but in the end the screenwriters felt that it was best to leave her out of the superhero slugfest. They seemed to have a good reason, however.
According to Collider, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Marcus McFeely recently discussed their decision to cut The Wasp from the film. They had a few reasons for doing so, and felt that the movie worked better as a whole once they removed her from the script. According to Markus, one of the big reasons for leaving her out was that it would take her superhero debut away from Peyton Reed’s Ant Man and The Wasp.
McFeely went on to explain that there were other reasons to leave her out of Civil War, too. Another big reason for the cut was that including her would change the Ant-Man dynamic, moving him from being a solo hero in the film to being part of a couple:
“There was a period where we talked about bringing Wasp in. There was actually a draft Wasp was in because she was so almost on the edge of being in Ant-Man, but then you’re taking something awesome out of the Ant-Man team’s quiver if it’s like, ‘Well, we’re doing her!’ Plus she had a similar skill set, so it’s like ‘Well, maybe we just isolate it to Scott.’”
“When you see the movie, you see that Scott is his own comic relief so it would change that a little bit. They would be this pair. Everybody else we would talk about them and then they’d go away, but we got most everybody back.”
Having The Wasp in Captain America: Civil War could have been interesting, since the character (or at least Janet Van Dyne, Hope’s mother) was pro-registration in the comics. Scott Lang, of course, is confirmed to be an anti-registration member of Team Cap. From McFeely’s comments, though, it sounds as though the pair would be on the same side so that dynamic would likely have been averted anyway.
Fans of The Wasp may not be happy with the news, but at least they can take solace in knowing that she was at least considered for the film. Unfortunately, it sounds like they’ll have to wait until 2018 to see The Wasp in action. Barring any unforeseen plot twists, though, they can at least look forward to her likely appearing again onscreen a year later in Infinity War Part 2.
