Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s new Gunfight mode was revealed, and it will have quick two-on-two gameplay that’s best for busy players. The more compact game mode is certainly different when compared to Modern Warfare’s previously announced 20-player offerings. Those that prefer a more methodical approach to their shooters will definitely have the most fun in Gunfight.

The standard multiplayer offerings in Call of Duty, like Team Deathmatch or Domination, can take a decent chunk of time to finish; even last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 had a battle royale mode included that could stretch even longer. Ultimately, this means that some players might not get to play as much Call of Duty as they’d like, and that’s not a good thing from Infinity Ward’s perspective. This new mode seemingly seeks to satisfy those that have a more jump in and go mentality.

According to Polygon, the new Gunfight mode is akin to something like a cooperative fighting game with its short 40-second rounds and quick action. It pushes players to use more mindful strategies, as opposed to Call of Duty’s conventional run and gun gameplay, and knowing the map’s most advantageous locations will definitely help those looking to snag a lot of victories. Health regeneration present in other game modes is absent in Gunfight, meaning that committing to fights and outplaying opponents is extremely important. The first team to six victories will take the game. While Gunfight is naturally an intense and competitive mode due to its compact nature, it’s definitely conscious of players who may be on a strict time schedule.

Call of Duty’s staple customizable loadouts have also been cut from the mode completely, making it even easier to queue up and jump into some games.  Weapons will be pre-determined before a round begins and will change during each round that follows. If the in-game timer reaches 40 seconds, a flag appears on the map that players will either have to take over and hold for three seconds or opt to defeat the opposing team before they take control of the flag. With maps being intentionally smaller, the two opposing teams will be forced to fight.

As of right now, Infinity Ward has talked about three of the maps that’ll be included in Gunfight. King is a warehouse map that looks somewhat similar to the tutorial mission’s location from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare; Pine takes players to a forest where they’ll have to utilize trees and small buildings spread throughout; and Stack is a containment yard that sounds a lot like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Rust. The playlist’s map offerings will be completely separate from the game’s other multiplayer modes.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare definitely seems like it’s being made with more thoughtful consideration to its core multiplayer offerings, as well as what the fans have been longing to see from the series. Gunfight seems like a step in the right direction for multiplayer so far. Infinity Ward is also attempting to unite all of its players with no purchasable season pass, as well as true cross-play support. While other shooters have already done some of these things, cross-play and no season pass are a first for the series in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. It’ll definitely be interesting to see how it pans out for Infinity Ward and if it’ll affect the inevitable follow-up titles that come down the line.
