Activision finally unveiled gaming’s worst-kept secret today, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, with a brand new trailer that also announces the return of a franchise icon in Captain John Price. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been leaked for what feels like months at this point, with various trusted sources or industry insiders suggesting that a reveal was coming at the end of the month.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be the latest trip back to one of the sub-series in the franchise that has been the most popular, with many fans holding Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in high regard. Amusingly, the fourth Modern Warfare will abandon numbers altogether, and will function as a reboot for the series that is meant to attract new players while also resurrecting some of the characters and stories that Call of Duty veterans are so fond of. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been playable for quite some time, making headlines for Activision’s decision to host several celebrity athletes at a gameplay preview over a month ago, but has only just had its gameplay officially demoed.

According to the trailer Activision released earlier today on YouTube, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be a reprisal of the adventures of Captain Price, one of the most popular characters ever introduced to the franchise. He’ll have a new voice actor, but his grizzled cadence remains the same. The game appears to be based on stealth counter-terrorism in much the same way fans have come to expect from Modern Warfare, with an emphasis on keeping technology out of the wrong hands while also committing acts that, while dirty, keep the world “clean,” according to Price. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release on October 25, 2019. Here’s the full trailer:

One of the most interesting things about the trailer is the disclaimer that states it features actual gameplay footage. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare looks absolutely jaw-dropping, with character models and environments that are impressively realistic. There’s not a lot known about Modern Warfare at the moment, but what we currently know is that it will have a single-play campaign, co-op play, an “immersive narrative experience” that spans those two modes alongside multiplayer, and a brand new gameplay engine. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will also support cross-play between PC and consoles while abandoning the season pass model of previous games, delivering free DLC and post-launch events to its players.

The trailer, alongside the new information regarding the title, all point towards a reinvigorated Call of Duty franchise in 2019. While previous titles haven’t been bad by any means, they’ve distanced themselves from what fans want and have fallen prey to employing season pass models that ruffled the feathers of fans. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is exactly the reboot that Activision needs, and if the trailer is anything to go by, it may actually succeed in bringing the franchise to a whole new generation of fans in 2019.
