[Update: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare gets trademarks and official teaser trailer!]

The Call of Duty franchise has become such a global phenomenon and on an annual basis has the capacity to bring in more money than most Hollywood blockbusters do at the box office. Early installments in the series focused on gameplay based on events during World War II but eventually it was brought to near present day and the series has never looked back since. The game’s events started to instead reflect the current political landscape.

Modern Warfare, the four core game in the series and first set in modern times, was one of the most important video games to ever be released. Titles like Doom and Wolfenstein may have established the first-person shooter as a genre but Modern Warfare elevated it to its next state as a staple of popular culture and a new benchmark for the genre. Along with bringing Call of Duty forward in time it also helped establish the cinematic storyline and set pieces that the franchise became known for. So popular is it that there is a new Call of Duty every year title every year now with 2016’s entry potentially including a remastered version of Modern Warfare.

An unexpected listing on the U.S. PlayStation Store accidentally revealed something called Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare earlier this week. After 2015’s Black Ops 3 from developer Treyarch, fans and the media were speculating the next title from Infinity Ward to be an overhauled followup to the poorly received Call of Duty: Ghosts, a return to the WWII setting which no triple-A current-gen console games are exploring, another Modern Warfare title or something new entirely - the latter being the most likely since a report earlier this year claimed this new game would be largely set in space, which follows Ghosts’ space-set mission.

Promotional material has since surfaced online that appears to confirm that a version of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare will include a remastered version of Modern Warfare. One of the leaked images, which appears to be from a retailer, states that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, will be released in November. The standard edition of the game is priced at CA$79.99 (roughly $60 in USD) while the Legacy Edition, which includes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, is priced at CA$109.99 (about $88 in USD). The image, which first appeared on Reddit, states that 10 multiplayer maps will be included in the Modern Warfare remaster, although it doesn’t specify which ones. The original Call of Duty 4 ultimately received 20 multiplayer maps, four of which were released as DLC.

Most games have their own social media page and Call of Duty is no different. Except the official page for Activision’s shooter appears to have leisurely hinted that all these rumors are true. The official Twitter account decided to respond to a two-year-old post with non-other than a poop emoji. Angus Vanderslott claimed that if he ever heard he words ‘Call Of Duty 4 PS4 Remaster’ in the same sentence then he would sh*t his pants. Well, whoever was in control of Call of Duty’s official account decided to respond just three days ago with a deuce and the emoji for a pair of pants. This heavily suggests that Angus needs to invest in some new garments. It could possibly be one of the most creative ways to announce a remastered title.

An announcement of this magnitude is not without its critics. Fans are already starting to express distaste that only the first Modern Warfare title is included. Last year, a fan made petition called for a Modern Warfare trilogy collection for PS4 and Xbox One consoles, gaining hundreds of thousands of signatures. Initial reaction to the news has been somewhat unkind towards the remaster being only made available towards those who purchase the near $100 version of the latest Call of Duty title.

Further adding credence to the imminent Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare announcement (which generally comes in May so we’re on schedule), Call of Duty: Black Ops III was updated today with a 24/7 Nuk3town playlist which features a giant spaceship (looks like something out of Wing Commander) at the end of every match and a massive explosion, followed by an unclear logo of sorts, and of course, the mysterious “Nuketown Offline” text at the end.

The reveal first came from a clearly planned Twitch stream featuring NBA player Karl Anthony-Towns teaming up with streamer Swiftor. Expect official unveiling very soon, early next week at the latest we suspect.
