As players prepare for the huge zombie update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, clues indicate that they might see other changes similar to what they would expect from Fortnite. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was released last year to pretty good reviews. It surprised many players when it was revealed that there would be no single-player campaign, but it did include something new: the multiplayer mode Blackout, a recent addition to the ever-popular battle royale genre, and developer Treyarch’s answer to Fortnite.

Although Blackout has remained very popular since the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, it has been hit by similar criticisms that have plagued all Call of Duty games for years. More recently, Treyarch has been accused of overworking their employees, which is a problem that has been seen with many battle royale games, including Fortnite and its developer Epic Games.

According to Eurogamer, Blackout fans have started to notice changes around the map similar to the way Fortnite teases its content updates before they happen. These changes are coming just before the big zombie update that is set to be released tomorrow. Players have started to notice blood in unusual spots, as well as claw marks and tools that weren’t there before. An example of the recent additions is in the corner of the graveyard, just outside the mausoleum, where players can find a shovel, trash bags, and a trail of blood leading into the building and to a pair of gore-covered shears.

In Fortnite, small changes almost always precede bigger changes in the island and the lore. As such, many Black Ops 4 players are trying to piece together clues and figure out the story of what’s happening on Blackout’s island before the official reveal. Several theories can already be found on Reddit, like /u/Wyowa’s explanation of what could be happening in the graveyard.

It will be interesting to see how many players Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is able to pull in with these changes to Blackout. The morphing map and theories of what may or may not be coming is a big part of the Fortnite community and has shown that it can keep players coming back. Treyarch is trying to capture that magic and while Blackout is still very popular, it does have some hills to climb, including price of entry. Despite Fortnite remaining free-to-play, Blackout players must purchase Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and the updates in order to experience the full game. Still, Blackout has also shown it has staying power, and if the changes are significant enough, Treyarch may continue to have players happily handing over the cash.

“It would appear that some citizen decided he should come up and bury the dead in the graveyard but they turned into zombies before he could get there causing the truck to crash into a gravestone. The guy/gal then scrambles out and into the cover of the stone mausoleum where he/she is inevitably killed after trying to cut off the zombie head with garden shears.”
