Buffy The Vampire Slayer writer and executive producer Marti Noxon has landed a four-year TV development deal with Netflix. Noxon’s long list of credits include writing and producing for Buffy spin-off Angel, Glee, and Mad Men, and serving as showrunner for NBC’s Brothers & Sisters, and Grey’s Anatomy spin-off Private Practice. She’s also credited as series creator for HBO’s Sharp Objects (which starred Amy Adams), Bravo’s Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, Lifetime’s UnREAL, and AMC’s Dietland.
Noxon is entering a television-exclusive deal, with Netflix getting the first look at projects she brings forward. Noxon’s production company banner Tiny Pyro, along with its sitting president Marisa Grasso, will also be moving to Netflix after two years with Skydance TV. As reported by THR, Noxon expressed her enthusiasm at becoming television’s latest power player to make the move:
Netflix is likewise elated about the partnership. On Noxon, VP of Netflix Originals Cindy Holland said: “Her work is often both brave and vulnerable, with a distinct voice, sense of humor and tone that is uniquely her own.” Along with Shonda Rhimes (Scandal), Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story), and Kenya Barris (Black-ish), Netflix’s still-growing army of creative giants have the potential to conceive countless new hits.
“Who can resist the allure of Netflix? Not only do they continually produce ground-breaking and visually stunning content, they’ve developed a platform that’s so influential it’s become a verb. I Netflix at home, happily, and now I’m even more excited to Netflix for a living.”
Noxon’s work heavily focuses on the stories of women and diverse characters, especially in the #MeToo era. UnREAL, Sharp Objects, and Dietland all explore themes of power abuse, and speak to generations passionate about standing up to it. Sharp Objects and Dietland were both adapted from books - by Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) and Sarai Walker, respectively. They use a miniseries structure, which in recent history has seen more success as a bingeable f0rmat. Dietland, which aired week to week on AMC was cancelled after one season. Netflix has already been producing original shows with themes similar to Noxon’s like GLOW, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and most recently She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. With this dream team in place, the best is definitely yet to come.
