Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul both say they would be glad to appear on the spinoff Better Call Saul if creator Vince Gilligan asked. With Breaking Bad currently celebrating its 10th anniversary, an event commemorated by a recent EW cover, fans are once again wondering if they will ever see Walter White or Jesse Pinkman pop up on the spinoff series Better Call Saul.

Numerous Breaking Bad characters have already crossed over to Better Call Saul, which is getting set to enter its fourth season on AMC. The spinoff’s main character Saul Goodman aka Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), of course, was a big part of Breaking Bad, serving as Walter White’s attorney/fixer, as was main supporting character Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks). Last year, Better Call Saul imported Breaking Bad’s biggest villain Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), who has now become central to the spinoff story. Other characters have also crossed over for appearances big and small, including Hector Salamanca (Mark Margolis), Tuco Salamanca (Raymond Cruz), Lawson (Jim Beaver) and Krazy-8 (Max Arciniega).

But, of course, the two characters fans most want to see cross over are chemistry teacher turned meth kingpin Walter White (Cranston) and his on-again/off-again accomplice Jesse Pinkman (Paul). Speaking to EW as part of the Breaking Bad 10th anniversary cover issue, Cranston and Paul both said they would be ready and willing to hop aboard Better Call Saul if series creator Vince Gilligan put out the call. Paul said:

And for his part Cranston echoed Paul’s words:

“My attitude towards it is the same I had from when Better Call Saul first started. If Vince decided to put Jesse in Better Call Saul, it’s going to be for a reason, and that reason’s going to be very satisfying for me. I trust in Vince. I don’t think he would just do that to satisfy the fans. It would have a purpose, and whether or not he decides to find that purpose or searches for the purpose, I don’t know. But if he does find that purpose, I’m happy to jump on board.”

With Better Call Saul getting set to enter its fourth season, it’s entirely possible that Paul or Cranston - or both - have already filmed appearances in secret that audiences will soon get to see. Indeed, series creator Vince Gilligan has already teased that more Breaking Bad characters are set to make the jump to Better Call Saul. It would be just like Gilligan to keep a lid on a Walter White or Jesse Pinkman appearance and spring it on the audience at some random moment. Of course, any appearance by White or Pinkman would involve their pre-Breaking Bad incarnations, as Better Call Saul is still a long way from catching up with the events of the original series.

“If he asked, I would just say yes. [Vince] takes such meticulous care of his characters and the story, and he changed our lives. ‘Yes’ is the answer. Even if it’s just a brush-by. A quick little something. We’ve come to know people who we’ve seen before but we don’t know that we’ve seen them before, because we were in the store and we just passed by them. Or we might even have a word or two. ‘Oh no, please go ahead.’ ‘Thank you for holding the door.’ And then five years later, you would never remember that. So something as minuscule as that could be very interesting in the fabric of the whole thing.”

One radical - but highly unlikely - idea for how to incorporate Walt, Jesse, and other Breaking Bad characters into Better Call Saul would be for the spinoff to completely catch up with the events of the original show and actually retell some or all of the story from Saul Goodman’s point-of-view. Besides being a dream scenario for fans, such a move would also represent a daring narrative experiment. Perhaps fans will learn more about plans for future Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul crossover appearances when the Breaking Bad cast assembles for a 10th anniversary reunion at next month’s SDCC.
