Ash vs. Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell shares a behind the scenes photo from the set of season 3. While iconic genre actor Campbell has played many roles over the course of his long career, Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise is no doubt his signature character. Debuting in Sam Raimi’s original 1981 Evil Dead film, Ash began life as a fairly meek and unprepared target for the franchise’s demons, only to become much more of a badass butt-kicker in subsequent sequels Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. Full of bluster and often misplaced self-confidence, it was this Ash that became a legend in the horror world.

For years, fans relentlessly demanded a fourth installment in the Evil Dead series, one that might serve to wrap-up Ash’s time-traveling battle against the Deadite hordes. This prospect looked to be dead for good when producer Raimi and director Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe) rebooted the franchise in 2013, but by 2015, fans would finally get their wish. Well, sort of. Instead of an Evil Dead 4 film, Raimi and Campbell teamed up to make Ash vs Evil Dead, a TV series continuation of the titular hero’s story.

Airing on Starz, Ash vs. Evil Dead has been completely unrestrained when it comes to content, featuring just as many gallons of blood and gore as the film series. Despite pushing 60-years-old, Campbell also hasn’t missed a beat as Ash, at least by most accounts. A hit with both fans and critics, Ash vs. Evil Dead is headed into season 3 this fall, and filming of the new batch of 10 episodes is now well under way. To begin the hype, Campbell today shared a blood-covered behind the scenes shot from the set of AvED season 3 on Twitter. Check it out below.

While it’s unclear what the context of the above photo is, it seems likely that the scene features Campbell’s Ash either chopping up some Deadites with his trusty chainsaw hand or getting his ass kicked by said Deadites. Then again, knowing Ash, both things were happening at the same time. After all, rarely does the man emerge from a battle completely unscathed.

As any AvED fan will remember, season 2 ended with Ash in an oddly happy position, having successfully defeated Baal, returned to his own time, and been greeted as a conquering hero by the citizens of Elk Grove. Of course, happiness never lasts long for Ash, and his world is likely to be torn apart by the end of the season 3 premiere. Thankfully, Evil Dead fans wouldn’t have it any other way.
