Actor Terry Crews, who portrays Sgt. Terry Jeffords on Brooklyn Nine Nine, personally thanked Mark Hamill on Twitter for helping the comedy find its new home on NBC. Crews also thanked Sean Astin and Lin-Manuel Miranda for their support. Alluding to a classic Luke Skywalker move, Crews tweeted: “@HamillHimself I want to personally THANK YOU Mark for using the power of the force to save Brooklyn Nine Nine! Wipes dirt off shoulder.”
Since Thursday, it’s been quite the wild ride for fans of Brooklyn Nine Nine. After news broke that the cop comedy wouldn’t be returning to FOX after the season 5 finale, the show was looking dead in the water. Shortly after the shocking announcement, a campaign was launched in the hopes of Hulu rescuing and subsequently resurrecting the show (since they happen to own domestic streaming rights.) Alas, fans were once again sucker-punched when it was announced Hulu passed on the offer. Once again, the show looked dead in the water.
That all changed on Friday when co-creator and showrunner Dan Goor tweeted that the show had been picked up by NBC for a sixth season. The news was almost immediately confirmed by Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s other co-creator Michael Schur. Soon enough, cast members Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumar, Chelsea Peretti, and Stephanie Beatriz were joining in on the celebration. On the heels of the announcement, NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said: “Ever since we sold this show to Fox I’ve regretted letting it get away, and it’s high time it came back to its rightful home.”
When news first broke of the now reversed cancellation, fans were quick to vent their frustration on Twitter, including Star Wars’ actor Mark Hamill, who wrote “Oh NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! I’m SO not ready to say #ByeBye99. Be forewarned @FOXTV-when networks dump shows I love, I’m known for holding grudges a long, L-O-N-G time. I’m still mad @CBS didn’t renew #SquarePegs! #EverythingILikeGetsCancelled.” He also shared a fan-favorite moment from Brooklyn 99 involving a police lineup and The Backstreet Boys. This outpouring of love eventually received gratitude from Terry Crews, as seen above.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine explores the lives of some decidedly out-there police officers working out of Brooklyn’s 99th precinct. Created by the aforementioned Goor and Schur, the series has won accolades over the years for its generally progressive outlook, totally kooked-out characters, and left-field humor. That said, the cult favorite was hardly the only show cancelled by FOX this week. Two other well-liked comedies, The Last Man on Earth and The Mick, also got the boot. After three seasons, FOX also axed the comic book-inspired Lucifer. Meanwhile, the network is surprisingly resurrecting Tim Allen’s sitcom Last Man Standing; a bold move which was likely inspired by the success of Roseanne’s recent return to ABC.
