Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been rescued by NBC and will return for season 6, but not until the start of 2019. Fans of B99 recently went through about 36 hours of panic and grief after learning that it had been canceled by FOX. However, amid a fierce social media campaign to save the show, several other networks and streaming platforms were already expressing interest in picking it up, and NBC (whose studio arm, Universal Pictures, produces the show) ended up staking a claim on a 13-episode sixth season.
The comedy series is set in a Brooklyn police precinct and features an ensemble cast, including Andy Samberg, Terry Crews and Melissa Fumero, as a group of (mostly) competent detectives. Although it suffered from a live ratings slide due to audiences preferring to watch it time-shifted or as part of a binge on its SVOD home, Hulu, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has a massive following and is so far the only series to be rescued from cancelation amid the usual spring cull of TV shows.
Per TV Line, Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 is being held for midseason by NBC, which means fans will have to wait until the start of 2019 to return to the precinct. The show’s new time slot has yet to be determined. While it may be frustrating to have to wait another eight months to see the team back in action, a midseason premiere makes sense given that season 6 will only be half as long as previous seasons.
It’s possible that NBC will expand to 22-episode seasons if the ratings for season 6 are good enough, but not necessarily a given; NBC comedy The Good Place (which was created by Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Michael Schur) has been doing well with 13-episode seasons. Speaking of The Good Place, that show is returning for a third season this fall, on Thursdays at 8:30pm, likely premiering in mid-September. If you’re a Brooklyn Nine-Nine fan in need of a fix while you wait for the sixth season, we’d recommend getting caught up on The Good Place.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of many beloved shows that have been canceled by FOX, but is one of the lucky few that have found new life elsewhere. Let’s hope that it settles in well at its new home, and season 6 will be worth waiting for.
