Brie Larson and filmmaker Charlie Kaufman are joining forces on the movie I’m Thinking of Ending Things for Netflix. Larson will be starring in the film (itself, based on the 2016 novel by Iain Reid), with Kaufman writing the script in addition to directing.
I’m Thinking of Ending Things (the book) follows a man and his girlfriend on a road trip to meet the former’s parents at their secluded farm. However, one thing leads to another and the girlfriend ends up being stranded at a deserted high school, left to wander its halls as she begins to deteriorate psychologically and wonders if she has any chance of escaping… or if she should just go ahead and end things before she gets any worse.
Deadline reports that Larson is currently finalizing her deal to star in I’m Thinking of Ending Things, with Kaufman set to produce in addition to writing/directing. While the movie is (admittedly) based on a rather psychologically dark premise, Kaufman has already ventured far down the rabbit hole that is human psychological suffering with his original screenplays for surreal films like Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Larson’s no stranger to psychologically challenging material either, especially after her Oscar-winning performance from the kidnapping drama Room.
Larson will make her Marvel Cinematic Universe as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel next March, and is slated to reprise her superhero role just two months later when Avengers 4 hits the scene. While it’s not yet clear what awaits Larson in the MCU beyond that, she will for certain be back on the big screen in early 2020 with a role in the courtroom drama Just Mercy (the latest project from her Short Term 12 and The Glass Castle writer/director, Destin Daniel Cretton).
Kaufman, who won his own Oscar for writing Eternal Sunshine, has continued to wow his fans (and most critics) with ambitious projects like his directorial debut Synecdoche, New York and the stop-motion animated film Anomalisa over the last decade… even though his actual films have struggle to attract much of a crowd at the box office. Fortunately, since it’s headed straight to Netflix, I’m Thinking of Ending Things will be more readily and widely available to the moviegoing public than if it had gone into a limited theatrical release like Kaufman’s last two movies. Larson’s involvement will doubt help to further bring attention to the filmmaker’s latest exploration of the (troubled) human psyche.
