Two classic Superman villains will appear in SYFY’s Krypton, the new TV series set on Superman’s home planet decades before its destruction. During San Diego Comic-Con 2017, it was confirmed that both Brainiac and Doomsday would appear in the show.
During the Krypton panel, DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns told the audience of a present-day conspiracy to prevent the birth of Superman. It implied that Brainiac will be heavily involved in the conspiracy. Johns also noted that Brainiac would be one of the show’s primary antagonists. Footage at the event seemed to include Brainiac’s ship which originated in the comic books. In another scene, fans could see tentacles that resembled Brainiac attacking Seg-El, the protagonist of the show and the grandfather of Superman.
Johns also commented that several DC characters, including Black Mercy (an alien plant), will appear in the series. The news could come as a surprise to fans who might have expected the show to focus on mostly original characters, especially since the series takes place long before Superman’s birth.
There are various versions of Brainiac’s origin story in the comics, so it’s not known yet which iteration of the character will appear on the show. He is generally portrayed as an android from the planet Colu with green skin and a supercomputer brain. The character has been enemies with Superman since his first appearance in Action Comics #242 in 1958.
Though Doomsday’s history with Superman doesn’t go as far back as Brainiac’s, the genetically engineered monster certainly made his mark not only in the world of Superman but in the DC Universe in general with the murder of Superman. The Death of Superman quickly became one of the most popular stories of the decade. The story was also adapted in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Doomsday’s live-actions appearances aren’t limited to Dawn of Justice. The character also served as the main antagonist in season 8 of Smallville, played by Sam Witwer. The Smallville version of Doomsday was a paramedic who suffered from blackouts. He eventually discovered that he was a powerful monster created by Zod. Brainiac, played by James Marsters, had a villainous role in season 5 of Smallville, and also appeared briefly in later seasons of the series. We will have to wait and see what versions of the two characters will be used on Krypton.
