The final trailer for Black Widow has arrived. After releasing a pair of billion dollar hits and the highest-grossing film of all time last year, Marvel Studios is coming back with Black Widow, the first movie in Phase 4 of the MCU. Set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, the film follows Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff on a solo adventure that forces her to fully reckon with her past, bringing her face to face with the family she left behind. Director Cate Shortland brought her experience helming dramatic thrillers like Berlin Syndrome to the table here, giving the movie a darker edge that will hopefully make it a fitting end to Natasha’s story following her death in Avengers: Endgame.

With an impressive supporting cast that includes Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Rachel Weisz, Black Widow is easily one of the most anticipated movies of 2020 as a whole. Even with concerns about the impact of the global coronavirus outbreak, the film is projected to open with $115 million in the U.S., thanks to an exciting marketing campaign that has spotlighted Pugh’s turn as Natasha’s fellow Red Room trainee Yelena Belova and the mystery villain Taskmaster. It appears Marvel has no intention of slowing down the hype train at this stage, either.

Marvel Studios has dropped the final trailer for Black Widow online, before it begins screening in theaters over the next few weeks. You can check it out below, followed by the movie’s latest poster.

The final trailer dives deeper into Black Widow’s plot than its predecessors, revealing that Taskmaster (whose true identity remains a secret for now) has taken control of the Red Room and is forcing its recruits to fight for them against their will. Just like the comic book version of the character, the MCU’s Taskmaster has acquired their skills by studying other superheroes. In addition to observing security footage of Nathasha’s hallway fight from Iron Man 2, Taskmaster is shown using Black Panther fighting techniques against Harbour’s Red Guardian and wielding a bow and arrow Hawkeye-style in the final trailer. The promo also touches on Natasha’s guilt over abandoning Yelena, which serves as the emotional crux of her decision to return to Russia and take down the Red Room once and for all in the film.

While it may be darker for an MCU movie, there’s still plenty of the franchise’s trademark humor in this Black Widow trailer, culminating with Natasha sharing an amusingly awkward meal with her former “family”. The theme of characters dealing with the mistakes of their past and trying to set things right is carried over from Endgame, but it promises to be all the more personal here, given Natasha’s violent history before she joined the Avengers. There’s also some interesting world-building going on, with Black Widow addressing how the mere existence of superheroes have led directly to threats like Taskmaster and maybe setting the stage for Yelena to become a central player in the MCU moving forward. With a little luck, Black Widow will deliver on that potential and get Phase 4 started with a bang.
