A new image from the set of Cate Shortland’s Black Widow offers fans a better look at a new character believed to be the villain Taskmaster. Marvel Studios is keeping their post-Phase 3 plans close to the vest. No project has been officially announced past next week’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, but there are a handful of movies already in the pipeline including Natasha Romanoff’s (Scarlett Johansson) long-overdue solo outing, which is already in principal photography.

Black Widow wrapped up her run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Endgame. After finding a way to undo Thanos’ Decimation in Avengers: Infinity War, Natasha and the core Earth’s Mightiest Heroes alongside their surviving allies execute a time heist to collect all six Infinity Stones - one of which is the Soul Stone, which required a sacrifice. Natasha decided to ultimately give up her life for the cause. But just because she’s already dead in the present time, that doesn’t mean fans will no longer see her since the Black Widow film will explore a time in her past that hasn’t been tackled in the MCU yet. That includes possibly squaring off with Taskmaster.

Shared on Twitter by Thomas Polito is a new set photo from Black Widow featuring Taskmaster who is reportedly played by O-T Fagbenle. It’s an overhead shot of the character, who is riding a tank while filming. Given the angle of the image, fans can have a better look at the upper part of Taskmaster’s costume in the MCU, including his headpiece. Check out the image below:

It’s important to note, however, that there’s no confirmation yet that Taskmaster will indeed be the villain of Black Widow (the film’s hasn’t been officially announced either). But assuming this is the case makes a lot of sense considering his match-up with Natasha. Taskmaster is known in the comic books to have the ability to mimic the abilities of his adversary, and since Black Widow is highly trained in hand-to-hand combat, fans can expect a lot of well-choreographed fight sequences in the film reminiscent of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Fans in the comments section are less than impressed with the way Taskmaster looks thus far. Some of them didn’t miss the similarities in aesthetics with the Power Rangers especially considering what looks like a helmet. There’s a handful of commenters, on the other hand, who pointed out that design elements and extra details will be added via CGI during post-production, so it’s best to reserve judgment until they see the character wearing the suit in action. Taskmaster has one of the most interesting character looks in the comics with his skull mask and cowl. It’s possible that these will be later integrated into the physical suit he’s wearing in these set photos. For the most part, Marvel Studios has stuck closely to the source material when adapting characters, so there’s a slim chance that they will drastically alter Taskmaster’s look in Black Widow. Otherwise, it could also be an entirely different character.
